What vet school applicants underestimate. Most people focus almost entirely on GPA when they think about getting into vet school. Grades do matter, especially your science GPA, but they are only one piece of the application. What a lot of applicants underestimate is how important real clinical experience and strong references are. Admissions committees want to see that you actually understand what veterinary medicine looks like day to day. Not just that you like animals, but that you have spent time in clinics, hospitals, shelters, or emergency settings and understand the realities of the profession. Another thing people underestimate is how much your references matter. Letters from veterinarians who truly know your work ethic, professionalism, and ability to handle responsibility can make a huge difference. A strong reference does more than confirm you worked somewhere. It advocates for you. And finally, many applicants underestimate how strategic the process needs to be. Applications are expensive and competitive, so it is important to research programs carefully and apply to schools where your academic profile and experiences actually align with what they are looking for. Getting into vet school is not just about looking impressive on paper. It is about showing that you are prepared for the rigor of the program and that you understand the profession you are entering. If you are applying or planning to apply, focus on building depth in your experiences, strengthening your academic record where you can, and surrounding yourself with mentors who can support you along the way. #vetschool #prevet #futurevet #vetstudent #vetmed

When I decided to apply to vet school, my GPA was around a 3.0. And if you spend any time in pre-vet spaces online, that number can make it feel like the door is already closed. But here’s the honest truth about vet school applications. Grades matter. Veterinary school is academically demanding, and admissions committees need to know you can handle the workload. A decent GPA is important because it shows you’re capable of managing the level of science and coursework required. But grades are not the only thing they look at. Experience alone won’t get you into vet school. And perfect grades alone usually won’t either. Admissions committees are trying to evaluate the whole applicant. They want to know: Do you understand the profession? Have you actually worked in veterinary medicine? Have you shown growth and resilience? Do veterinarians trust you enough to write strong letters? When I applied, I knew my GPA wasn’t the strongest part of my application. So I focused on the things I could control. I built as much veterinary experience as I could. Shelters, emergency clinics, general practice. I wanted to understand the field and show that I was serious about the profession. I retook courses through grade forgiveness to show academic improvement. I made sure I had strong reference letters from veterinarians who actually worked closely with me and could speak to my work ethic. And I used my personal statement to explain my growth and why veterinary medicine was the career I was committed to. Vet school admissions aren’t about being perfect. They’re about showing that you are capable of handling the academics and that you truly understand what this profession involves. If you’re applying to vet school and worried your GPA isn’t perfect, it doesn’t mean you can’t get in. But it does mean your application needs to show the full picture of who you are. #vetschool #prevet #vetstudent #futurevet #veterinarymedicine vetschoolapplication prevetlife vetmed

Everyone applying to vet school worries about GPA. And that makes sense. Veterinary school is academically demanding, and schools need to know you can handle the coursework. But something that surprised me during the application process is how much emphasis schools place on experience. Not just hours on a spreadsheet, but real exposure to the profession. Working in clinics. Seeing difficult cases. Understanding the emotional side of veterinary medicine. Admissions committees want to know that you understand what the job actually looks like. Loving animals is a great starting point, but veterinary medicine involves much more than that. It includes long hours, complex cases, difficult conversations with clients, and sometimes emotionally challenging situations. Experience helps you understand whether this profession is truly the right path for you. And it also helps admissions committees see that you are committed to it. If you’re applying to vet school, focus on building meaningful experiences and reflecting on what you learn from them. That perspective is often what makes an application stand out. When I was applying to vet school, I thought my application had to look perfect. Perfect GPA. Perfect extracurriculars. Perfect list of experiences. What I slowly realized is that a lot of applicants focus on the wrong things. Vet schools are not just trying to find the person with the prettiest resume. They are trying to figure out if you are someone who can handle the academic load, understand the profession, and grow into a competent veterinarian. A few things applicants stress about that are not as important as people think: Random extracurriculars that have nothing to do with veterinary medicine. Schools care much more about depth of clinical experience and your understanding of the profession. Trying to look perfect. Admissions committees see thousands of applications. The ones that stand out usually show growth, resilience, and a clear story about why veterinary medicine makes sense for that person. Having the highest GPA possible. GPA matters, especially your science GPA, but what schools really pay attention to is trajectory. If you struggled early and then showed improvement, that tells them a lot about how you handle challenges. What actually made the biggest difference in my application was building real clinical experience, working closely with veterinarians who could write strong reference letters, and making sure my personal statement clearly explained my growth. Admissions committees want to see that you understand the profession and that you are ready for the rigor of the program. Numbers are part of that picture, but they are not the whole story. If you are applying to vet school or planning to apply in the future, try to focus on the things that actually move the needle. is it higher or lower than you expected? acceptance rates for individual schools range a lot and can be as low as 10% (such as UC Davis and Cornell), or as high as 40% (such as the island schools - Ross and SGU). acceptance rates also depend on if you are an in-state or out of state (OOS) resident for that specific school. private schools such as midwestern and western have OOS acceptance rates of up to 25%, whereas public schools such as UC davis and texas a&m have OOS acceptance rates from 3-8%. what does this mean? if your state does not have a vet school (or like me, you did not think you would get accepted to your in-state), it is important to look at schools that have a higher acceptance rate / more seats saved for out of state students - for example: university of missouri’s class is made up of ~50% out of state students (60), compared to NC state at only about 20% out of state students (25). fun fact: MD programs for human physicians typically have an overall acceptance rate of 42% let me know your thoughts / questions below! #prevet #vetmed #veterinarian #vetschool #vetstudent

the next best thing besides getting into your in-state school may be a vet school that lets you switch to in-state tuition. but, it’s not always simple. at the university of missouri, to qualify for in-state tuition for years 2–4, we had to follow two big rules: • earn at least $2,000 in gross income • not leave missouri for more than 14 days that summer (and provide 2 forms of proof 🫠) switching saved me $90,000… however, it also meant missing big family moments that summer because i couldn’t leave the state. vet school is never without sacrifice — but being strategic about tuition can change your financial future. #vetmed #vetschool #prevet #vetstudent #veterinarian

the general public loves to see the debt of a medical professional and ask “why didn’t you just go to a cheaper school?” the truth is unfortunately, no veterinary school is cheap. on top of that, oftentimes, going to a school out of state (which is always more expensive) is our only option - whether we were not accepted to our in state school, or maybe our home state does not even have a veterinary school to apply to. we are simply chasing our dream, at the mercy of wherever that may take us. personally, i applied to 7 schools, including my in-state cornell (LIU did not exist then). i was denied from cornell, and got interviews at 3 out of state schools, ultimately being accepted to (& attended) the university of missouri. where are you from, and where did you end up going to school? #vetmed #veterinarian #vetstudent #vetschool #prevet

You’re not rejected because you’re dumb. You’re rejected because vet school applications are strategic. I had Cs. I failed O chem. I did not have a perfect GPA. What I did have: • An upward trend • A strong last 45 GPA • Heavy science loads done WELL • Targeted school choices • Sub-applications tailored when possible On VMCAS you only get one main statement. But many schools have supplemental essays. That’s where strategy matters. If you apply emotionally, you waste money. If you apply strategically, you give yourself a real shot. Canada said no. Australia said yes. Same dream. Different path. Comment APPLY if you want me to break down exactly how I researched schools and chose where to apply. #vetschool #prevet #vmcas #vetschoolapplications #futurevet

If you just got into vet school and you’re panic-studying anatomy right now… breathe. You do not need to memorise the brachial plexus before orientation. Everyone thinks preparing for vet school means getting “ahead.” It doesn’t. You will all start at the same place. And the pace will level you quickly. What actually matters when you start: Can you study efficiently? Can you retrieve information under pressure? Can you tolerate not understanding everything immediately? That is what determines who thrives. If I could go back, I would: • Build my study system before classes start • Practice explaining concepts out loud • Stop equating confusion with failure Vet school is not about being ahead. It is about being consistent. If you’re starting soon and feel anxious, that’s normal. Relax. You’re allowed to enjoy getting in. if you are lucky enough to live in one of these states, AND get into the school - you have hit the veterinary school tuition jackpot 💰 there are many different strategies and thought processes to applying to vet school. some of us choose to apply only to our in-state school - whether it’s for cheaper tuition or to stay close to family - but applying to just one school can increase your risk of not getting in. others may apply to a handful of schools, being open to higher tuition costs or farther locations, as long as it means getting in somewhere. p.s. purdue, iowa state, and oklahoma state were top contenders for cheapest as well!! #vetmed #veterinarian #prevet #vetschool #vetstudent

If you’re applying to vet school, most advice you hear is incredibly vague. “Get good grades.” “Get experience.” “Write a strong personal statement.” But after going through the process myself and talking to a lot of other vet students, what admissions committees are really looking for becomes a lot clearer. They are not just looking for perfection. They are looking for evidence. Evidence that you can handle the academic rigor of the program. Evidence that you understand what the profession actually involves. Evidence that you have grown and matured over time. That’s why an upward academic trend can matter more than a perfect transcript. It’s why real clinical experience where you take responsibility often carries more weight than hundreds of passive shadowing hours. It’s why references from veterinarians who actually supervised your work can be so powerful. And it’s why a personal statement that shows growth and self-awareness stands out much more than one that simply says you “love animals.” Vet schools are trying to admit future veterinarians, not perfect students. Show them who you are becoming. #prevet #vetschool #futurevet #vetstudent #vetmed
