Take it from someone who has been there and done that! You need backup storage. I highly recommend having at least two hard drives and then storing on the cloud as well. It is one of the reasons I love Pixieset as a platform for delivering photos to clients but it can also count as your backup storage if you don’t want to spend money on more expensive options. Other options are Google Drive, Dropbox and etc. Photographers, what do you use for backup storage?

Once your gallery is delivered, it’s really important to download your photos. Photographers can’t be responsible for long-term storage - not because we don’t want to, but because technology can fail. External hard drives and solid state drives can get damaged or stop working for no reason at all. And if you ever needed access to your edited images - we wouldn’t be able to help. I do have a clause in my contract about this, but the good news is your online gallery is basically unlimited. It’ll be there as long as I’m in business, so you can download your memories anytime and keep them safe.

How do I back up your photos? My camera writes every file to two cards at once, so there’s always a duplicate. Once I’m home, I back up your RAW images to a solid-state drive and multiple cloud-based services - at least four copies in total. I don’t delete anything from the camera or online until your full gallery is safely in your hands. Basically, your memories aren’t just captured - they’re locked down. ✨

I lost a part of my life once when my hard drive failed. I sent it for data recovery, but they couldn't recover any of the images. Now, when I look at my old photos, there are years of missing memories. I can’t relive those times anymore because the photos are gone. I don’t want that for my clients. Please, take some time to print your photos.
