This is the most time-consuming stage of the mapmaking process - but one we refuse to compromise on. It’s here that we achieve the high level of detail that has earned HARVEY Maps its reputation for reliable, readable hiking maps for nearly half a century. We use a special technique called photogrammetry to obtain our map data. Photogrammetry is the science of obtaining geographic data from photographs and digital imagery. The aerial photos used by our photogrammetrists are taken by a special high-precision camera fitted to a light aircraft. The plane takes photographs at regular intervals with a 60% overlap between each photo. This overlap is crucial for the photogrammetrist as, without it, the land cannot be seen in 3D. Special software and stereo eyepieces provide a bird’s eye view of the terrain. The hallmark of HARVEY mapping is its clarity and detail, primarily achieved with the use of precisely plotted contours. Every detail is accurately recorded with painstaking care, with special attention paid to the feature types that are useful for navigation. #harveymaps #cartography #photogrammetry #maps #navigation

2D videos are flat and boring. what if you could capture a place from the real world and revisit it in 3D or even VR? that’s exactly what I do. i take real world places and scan them using LiDAR and photogrammetry to archive places and memories. i then turn them into something more abstract and dreamlike with 3D software. getting started with this doesn’t take much and can be done with free software. i can’t write everything here, there’s a lot to cover. plus, I already have plenty of videos which go into way more detail. want to learn more? shoot me a follow, otherwise you may not see me again.

New Gaussian Splatting test with my new scanning rig A small backyard in Hamburg, captured with two DJI Osmo Action 6 cameras (10-bit Log for maximum dynamic range). The first part of the video is a free flythrough of the raw scan in Postshot (live screen capture). Then I move into Cinema 4D + Octane Render and start building on top of it. I added a Mercedes 280SL Pagoda, which is almost entirely lit by the Gaussian splats in the scene. The only exception is a virtual sun, since even 10-bit Log can’t fully capture the energy of direct sunlight; but it’s easy to recreate. The floor is not Gaussian splatting. I replaced it with a photogrammetry mesh from the same dataset; it works much better for shadows and reflections. With all that set up, the rest feels more like being a photographer in a virtual world: flying through the scene with Octane’s lens simulation, adding objects, and testing lighting. Even the trees are just dropped in. no extra lighting needed. New work for @richardbranson 🚀 Director @karenxcheng 🎬 VFX @rubenfro 🦾 So the original client brief was to make something for @virginvoyages new Terminal V.  I wanted to recreate my Jan 7 post, except go further with it. My idea was to have Richard Branson punch, transition to a 3D scan of the interior of the building, then to the exterior of the building. So we got the scans - I scanned @richardbranson, Bojan @polycam3d scanned the building interior, and @wefly did the drone capture of the building exterior But as I was on the plane flying back from the shoot, sitting in the window seat and glancing out the window… it occurred to me Why stop there? Let’s take it higher... up to Virgin Atlantic ✈️ But why stop there?? Let’s keep going... to VIRGIN GALACTIC 🚀 I was excited about the idea, but unsure because I knew it would not be easy to execute… I crossed my fingers and DM’d @rubenfro and asked him if he could pull it off. And daaaaamn. The level he took it to 🤯 Go follow @rubenfro and check out his work. He’s this mad scientist who specializes in real-time VFX (he even built his own software to generate these graphics *real time* how absolutely mindblowing is that??) His level of artistry and craftsmanship is astonishing. I have met so many incredibly talented people through Instagram and it has been an absolute privilege for me to get to work with such talent. The 3D scanning process, carried out using photogrammetry, converts the surfaces of the building’s naos, narthex, and additional spaces into a digital model using thousands of photographs. Erdal İnci’s @erdalinci photogrammetry-based work combines the architectural shell and decorative program into a single volumetric dataset, making the interior and exterior spaces simultaneously readable. This digital reconstruction reimagines the structure not only as a documented cultural asset but as a spatial archive that can be experienced from different perspectives.
