Listen, if you work at a school that looooves committees, this is for you! Read Across America should be about the BOOKS and STORIES. No dress up days, no contests, no nonsense that doesn’t matter. A few other options if you need them: Silent reading time for the whole school and guest readers from the school (principal, custodian, swap teachers, nurse) - kids that people know! And if you don’t have a committee, you can do all these things yourself, or form a committee if really needed! But it’s not…because it’s all about the books. Bring books to staff meetings, put a bin at the door of the library when teachers pick them up, put books in the copy room…or the best way? Deliver books to teachers or have students deliver the books if you have back-to-back classes. The worst that happens is that the teachers don’t read the books! Your job is to share books with students and teachers. Stop all the unnecessary stuff that doesn’t matter and focus on what is most important.

Alright, folks, Read Across America Week is coming up! In years prior, this nationwide celebration has been closely attached to the works and legacy of Theodore Geisel (Dr. Seuss). Many school districts have consciously made a shift away from his work and are refocusing their celebrations on diverse stories. Seuss’ works degraded people from the global majority and his depictions of them, while there were only few, were blatantly racist. But more importantly, there are SO many beautiful diverse stories being published today. Why spend a whole week in our schools celebrating literature that isn't inclusive of all our children? If your child's school is celebrating next week, this is an opportunity for you to speak up and bring about change! Many parents and educators share that there are no other alternatives to Seuss, and will continue celebrating him. That's simply not true. There are so many wonderful book alternatives and FREE resources available where educators have done the hard work and heavy lifting for you. There are plenty of ways to have fun, be creative, gather in cozy storytime, and celebrate all things that have to do with reading WITHOUT celebrating Seuss. Here are 5 daily themes, and books to go along with them, that you can use in your classroom or home to celebrate Read Across America Week: 1. Family - A Big Mooncake For Little Star - Papa, Daddy, and Riley - My Papi Has a Motorcycle 2. #OwnVoices -Laxmi's Mooch -What Happened To You -The Grandmaster's Daughter 3. Seriously- it’s based on YOUR reading. PRO TIP: Don’t tell your students you’re using the app. Casually set it up through a speaker and watch their reactions😂 Best moment ever. **No I’m not back in the classroom.
