Just because you’re injured doesn’t always mean you should do nothing! Of course there’s tons of nuances with this, but continuing training in the form of cross training is important to maintain aerobic capacity. And in some cases you can even build it! Less impact means you can do longer sessions on the bike, elliptical or the pool. Or course you should always be in communication with your medical team about what you should be doing and never add in any activity they do not approve of. The specifics of the exercises depends on your specific injury and the equipment you have available! It’s always good to maintain some form of strength training as well. Similar to the cross training this depends on the specifics of the injury and your equipment. While I was treating sever Achilles tendonitis we found I had a stress reaction in my calcaneus bone. Luckily caught before it turned into a fracture! But likely due to the pulling from the Achilles and a minor change in my gait to offload the tender part. Im currently in the middle of a half marathon prep cycle, but we are being conservative with treatment and recovery to make sure everything heals as well as it can. Boot and only cross training for 2 weeks before we bring back running. Stronger muscles = Better coordination, stability, and efficiency. More power, faster response time, and more stable joints (every muscle crosses a joint). 2. MOBILITY is priming your body. A short, tight muscle is a weak muscle. It leads to more cramps, more pinched nerves, and more strains/tears. Get FLEXIBLE, move deeper, and create space through all your joints - and unlock greater strength and more comfort in your body. 3. LISTEN to what your body is telling you. Is something sore? Don’t try to work THROUGH the pain!! Rest it and work on something else until it’s better. Find the cause of the pain/pinching/fatigue/ache and treat it with care. Heat, topical creams, stretches, massage. LEG DAY : RUNNER EDITION Name of the game here is to keep my strength sessions focused on the muscle groups I need to work to be a stronger runner without adding too much residual fatigue so I can hit that next hard workout 2 days later I’ve noticed the biggest difference in my ability to generate power and speed when I’m fatigued due to my consistency with lower body strength. I limit my lower body to once per week during marathon training, whereas in the off season I’d hit it twice! I also find upper body training, specifically back and core, helps me maintain my posture while I’m running fast / far. Being strong feels too good you guys WORKOUT DEETS: Back squats (barbell) - 4x8 Hanging leg raises - 4x12 RDLs - 3x12 Single leg RDLs - 3x10 /side Clam shells - 3x10 /side Split squat w calf raise (body weight) - 3x10 /side Hamstring ball roll in - 3x12 #runner #marathonrunner #strengthforrunners
