“May you find God in every living thing.” It’s easy to rush past that idea. We move from winter to spring, from busy week to busy week, and miss the quiet evidence of Him all around us. We say we want to feel closer to God—but sometimes we just don’t slow down long enough to see Him. Spring makes it harder to ignore. Buds open. Light lingers. 4 things to try BEFORE you start scripture study! I know, we may think that we just can’t handle doing anything BEFORE we read— we need simple stuff. But… these are actually all pretty simple and I PROMISE that the little effort will make your time in the scriptures even better! 1. Start with a prayer of INTENTION (tell Heavenly Father how you are actually feeling and request the specific help you are looking for the in the scriptures that day) 2. Have WRITING materials ready to go (don’t wait until something is “good enough” to write down— EXPECT that the Spirit will whisper something to your heart, even if you are only reading one verse that day) 3. Be in a good ENVIRONMENT (make it enjoyable if possible, not where sleep is tempting) 4. THINK OF WHAT you read the day before to connect the storyline together (this helps reading comprehension so much, let chapter headings help you!) Remember, the main goal of scripture study is to invite the Spirit to be with us and connect with God. These ideas can help! A secondary goal is to have better reading comprehension— to actually understand what’s going on. These help with that too! What else do you do BEFORE you start scripture study that helps you?! Many times answers to prayer will not come right away. But we must have faith to continue, act in righteousness, and be persistent like Nephi when he was trying to get the brass plates. The Lord will show us a little bit at a time; as we study the scriptures, the Lord will give us the answers or the necessary strength for us to get through one more day, one more week, and to try one more time. Elder Richard G. Scott said: “Be thankful that sometimes God lets you struggle for a long time before that answer comes. That causes your faith to increase and your character to grow.” Through prayer and scripture study, the Lord has always given me the strength to act and endure one more day, one more week, and to try one more time. Sisters, I’m filled with gratitude as I reflect on the incredible journey we shared during my ministry assignment in Korea, Japan, and Mongolia. In Korea, we gathered for a women’s conference, a beautiful assembly of nearly 1,400 devoted women. I joyfully witnessed your unity and felt your enthusiasm. Maintaining the Spirit requires effort. And your effort, your dedication to prayer, scripture study, and adherence to the prophet’s counsel was inspiring. Your focus is on building faith in our Savior, Jesus Christ. In Japan, we had meaningful discussions in a women’s devotional. I urged you to seek answers to your questions by relying upon the words of our living prophet and to prioritize the first and second great commandments. When we prioritize love of God and love of our neighbor and family, then the things that don’t have eternal significance drop off our lists. Wrapping up our trip, I had the unforgettable opportunity to meet with my Relief Society sisters in Mongolia. They are strong, committed, devoted to the Lord, and preparing for their temple. What a glorious blessing is theirs to soon have a house of the Lord in their homeland. I love you dear sisters all over the world. Most importantly, you are loved by Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. They are intimately aware of your circumstances.
