First, we talk about why you usually shouldn’t try this—because leaving the dock in these conditions can go bad quickly if you’re not prepared. But sometimes, you need to go. And when you do, preparation and teamwork are everything. Here’s the breakdown: Why not to leave in these conditions (and when you have to) Crew briefing & preparation Using the windward stern line to spring the boat away Avoiding contact with the leeward boat and its mooring lines Avoiding the boats on the other side of the marina Full execution of the manoeuvre under 30 knots of wind It’s a beautiful example of how the right spring line, teamwork, and patience can turn a stressful moment into a smooth departure.
