STMany Stepmum’s come to me with the same issue.
The frustration around expecting to “do it all” without any of the recognition, authority or reward that a bio parent gets.
It causes resentment, exhaustion and lack of feeling fulfilled in the role.
Many Stepmum’s carry on supporting financially, emotionally and physically because they care about their stepkids and partner, they want to fit into the family, they struggle with people pleasing, they aren’t sure how much they can step back without it coming across like they don’t care and aren’t sure of their role overall.
If you’re expected to cook, care, organise your family and support your stepkids.
…but can’t make decisions for your household or enforce rules, something has to change.
Here’s what you could say to your partner around different areas:
“I’m happy to help, but I need clarity on what decisions I’m allowed to make.”
“If I don’t have authority in that area, it’s best if I step back from responsibility too.”
This all comes from a place of love and self worth, not control and anger.
