INThere’s a fruit fly walking around right now that was never born.
Researchers recently reconstructed the entire wiring diagram of a fruit fly’s brain, its connectome, and recreated it inside a computer, then connected that digital brain to a simulated body.
The result was remarkable. The virtual fly began to walk, groom, and feed, even though nobody trained it to behave like a fly and no datasets or reinforcement learning were involved.
Instead of teaching a model to imitate behavior, scientists rebuilt the brain neuron by neuron, allowing the behavior to emerge naturally from the biological structure itself.
This is very different from how most modern AI systems work, which typically learn patterns from data rather than reproducing the underlying architecture of a brain.
A fruit fly brain contains about 125,000 neurons, while the human brain contains tens of billions.
