EGMental health isn't about being calm, positive, or "having it together."
It's about whether someone can feel legitimate pain.
As Carl Jung said, Mental illness is often a substitute for legitimate suffering.
When grief isn't felt, it turns into numbness.
When fear isn't felt, it turns into anxiety.
When vulnerability isn't felt, it turns into loneliness.
Pain doesn't disappear when we avoid it just finds another way.
As Carl Rogers put it,
When I accept myself just as l am, then I
can change.
Mental health isn't avoiding pain. It's having the capacity to stay with it long enough to move. ❤️
