I’m choosing to move away from non-stick pans and back to simpler ways of cooking — cast iron, stainless steel, and clay tagines. Some non-stick coatings have historically used PFAS (“forever chemicals”). These chemicals are classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as possibly carcinogenic and have been associated in human studies with immune dysfunction, hormone disruption, and metabolic effects. Evidence note: PFAS exposure has been linked in epidemiological studies to increased risk of kidney and testicular cancer, thyroid disease, immune suppression, and altered lipid metabolism. Reducing avoidable household exposure is a recognised public-health strategy. Cooking is a daily exposure. Small amounts, repeated often, can matter over time. Traditional cookware uses stable materials that have been trusted for generations. Less chemical load. More peace of mind.
