As the sixth installment in the Reading Resources series, this guide invites educators and learners to explore Walid Raad’s work and creative methods. Through archiving, story-telling, and performance, Walid Raad asks whether documentary traces of historical events and experiences can ever fully capture the “truth” of what happened. This teaching guide invites learners and educators to think, with Walid Raad, about how multiple truths are assembled, told, performed, and taught. Reading Resources: Walid Raad was developed by Wendy Tronrud (A.R.T. Education Advisor) in collaboration with A.R.T. An art historian, a visionary, and a woman who turned her passion into a bridge between cultures. For four decades, she built one of the largest galleries in the heart of Beirut, opening its doors to Arab artists whose works reached the world stage. She collaborated with some of the region’s greatest names: Etel Adnan, Aref El Rayess, Samia Halabi, Walid Raad, Akram Zaatari, and many more. Walid Raad, Sweet Talk: Commissions (Beirut) _ Solidere 1994–1997 (2019), presented by Paula Cooper Gallery and Sfeir-Semler Gallery, was exhibited this year in the Art Basel Unlimited 2025 section. Sweet Talk: Commissions is an artistic portrait of the postwar reconstruction of Beirut. After the end of the fifteen-year civil war, Solidere — a private-public development company — initiated the systematic demolition of the city center, displacing residents and erasing the traces of their lives. Raad works with footage filmed by the very people who were evicted — former residents. He transforms these scenes of destruction into hypnotic symmetry: dust rising from explosions is mirrored in a visual rhythm, forming a loop that compels us to keep watching, over and over, until memory falls silent. This is no longer just a record of demolition — it becomes a ritual of loss, a rehearsal for forgetting. Raad does not take the side of Christians or Muslims. He stands with those who were erased — regardless of confession. Not against reconstruction, but against amnesia. Against the logic where markets, concrete, and capital triumph over memory, presence, and the right to the city. His video speaks for those no longer in the new center, but who were once the soul of the old one. #artbasel2025 #walidraad
