YOAct up, act on, act out, act as, act like… do you know the differences between these uses of the verb “act”? The first three are phrasal verbs and the last two contain prepositions that are commonly used with this verb, but all of them have different meanings, and my goal in making today’s video is to familiarize you with them. Hope you find it helpful!
Take note of these five uses of the verb “act”:
1. act up = this phrasal verb has slightly different meanings depending on the subject:
🔸If a baby or child is acting up, they’re behaving badly: It’s common for young children to act up at church because they don’t have much to do besides listen.
🔸If technology is acting up, it’s not working correctly: I couldn’t do my homework all weekend because the Wi-Fi was acting up.
🔸If a body part or a certain medical condition you have is acting up, it’s causing you more pain than it usually does: My allergies always start to act up at the beginning of spring.
2. act on = if you act on something like a feeling, an emotion, or a thought, you do something as a reaction to this feeling, emotion, or thought:
Once she saw people taking out drugs, she acted on her instincts and left the party immediately.
3. act out = if you act out a scene of a movie or a story, you perform it with physical motions:
Today, my English teacher asked us to act out scenes from the book we’re reading in front of the class.
Also, if a baby or child acts out, this can also mean in American English that they are behaving badly because they’re unhappy, stressed, or upset about something.
4. act as = if a person or thing acts as something, it serves a certain purpose or role, often one that it doesn’t normally serve. This use of “act” is formal:
When writing an essay, the last paragraph should always act as a conclusion that summarizes all of the essay’s main points.
5. act like = we can use “act like” plus a noun or plus a subject and a verb to talk about how someone or something is behaving:
After his mom saw the video he posted on social media, she told him that he was acting like a clown and to grow up.
