BLFollowing from the 2025 season where I was delisted from the AFL, here are the main learnings I took away from it…
#1. It’s so important to have other passions and interests away from football for several reasons. Not just because football only lasts for a small part of your life, but balancing your energy and mental wellbeing into other passions helps your on field performance immensely. If you’re not happy and thriving off field, it’s hard to translate that to game day.
#2. The industry is brutal, but it’s worth every moment. Although the external pressure and expectations can be hard for players to handle, what you can gain from it, its worth every struggle. The big games, crowds/supporters, the external opportunities and the people you come across, it’s like no other industry.
#3. Talent will only get you so far. If you’re a player with talent, but lack work ethic and professionalism, you’ll fall behind fast. The physical demands of the game are continuously increasing, if you can’t rise to those standards, you won’t last long.
#4. There’s a lot you can’t control as a player, all you can do is the best you can do with the opportunities that are presented to you. Selection, coaching and management decisions, career trajectory are all out of your control.
