SURise and shine everyone, it’s time for your Monday Morning Mental Maths Training! Today we’re practicing the subtraction method that we learnt last week. If you missed it, here’s a recap:

Since subtraction is about the difference between two numbers, we can ‘pick those numbers up’ and, as long as we keep the distance the same, we can move them anywhere along the number line, hopefully finding an easier subtraction that requires less borrowing.
In practice that means adding (or subtracting) the same number to both terms so that we get a multiple of ten as the second term:
👉e.g. 58-39
If we add 1 to both terms, the answer stays the same but the subtraction might be easier:
59-40 = 19 🤓
You’ll be able to make all of these subtractions slightly easier by adding a number to each term so that the second term becomes a multiple of 10 (a number ending in zero).
