June 26, 4 CE – Augustus Adopts Tiberius On this day in 4 CE, Emperor Augustus finally gave in and adopted his stepson Tiberius—because every other heir dropped dead. His dream team? Marcellus (dead), Gaius Caesar (dead), Lucius Caesar (also dead). Even Agrippa Postumus, a final pick and known chaos monster, got adopted and then swiftly exiled for being too much. Which left Augustus with Tiberius, the brooding military workhorse he never actually liked. To keep it in the family, Augustus made Tiberius adopt Germanicus, a fan favorite and great-nephew, so the bloodline could at least pretend to stay Julian. Meanwhile, behind the scenes: Livia, Augustus’s wife and Tiberius’s mom, was playing Roman chess while the boys played checkers. Ancient gossip blamed her for clearing the imperial bench—Marcellus mysteriously died, Postumus was “quietly removed,” and Julia (Tiberius’s wife and Augustus’s daughter) got exiled for being a little too much fun. Funny how Livia’s enemies always seemed to vanish. Tiberius finally became emperor in 14 CE, but not before sulking in self-imposed Rhodes exile because Augustus treated him like a second-string Caesar. His rule was… competent but bitter. And it didn’t help that Germanicus—handsome, beloved, and everything Tiberius wasn’t—kept stealing his thunder. Germanicus conveniently died young too (shocker), and the imperial spotlight shifted to his son: Caligula. Yes, that Caligula. So after all Livia’s Machiavellian machinations, the empire still ended up with an emperor who made his horse a senator. Craving ancient drama with more backstabbing than Succession? Click “Julian” in the link in bio for Rome’s messiest family feud🏛️🔥💔 (aka the reading list and my sources). _____ #history #rome #augustus #historymemes #historicallypetty #historymeme #otd #onthisday #onthisdayinhistory

This striking bronze head of the emperor Augustus was discovered at Meroë in modern Sudan, far from the heart of the Roman world. Likely made in Roman Egypt, it once belonged to an over life size imperial statue. The historian Strabo tells us that around 25 BC Kushite forces raided Roman Egypt and carried off statues and treasure. This head was later found buried beneath the threshold of a temple, where visitors would have walked directly over the emperor’s face as a sign of disrespect. Ironically, that act helped preserve it for more than two thousand years. The bronze still retains remarkable detail and once had inlaid stone eyes that would have made Augustus appear almost lifelike. @britishmuseum #AncientRome #Augustus #RomanEmpire #AncientHistory #Egypt

Imagine watching a ten-year-old girl being paraded through Roman streets in golden chains, her humiliation cheered by crowds. This was Cleopatra Selene II in 30 BC, daughter of Egypt's legendary queen, displayed as Augustus's trophy after her mother's demise. The Romans anticipated she'd fade into obscurity like many royal captives before her. Yet, this princess had other ambitions. #AncientHistory #CleopatraSeleneII #CleopatraVII #Augustus #Mauretania Egypt

📍British Museum, London #rome #romanempire #augustus #cameo

How Romans May Have Built a Giant Limestone Tower on a Mountain The Trophy of Augustus (Tropaeum Alpium) is one of the most imposing monuments of the early Empire. Perched high above the Mediterranean in La Turbie, it was built in 6 BC to celebrate Augustus's definitive conquest of the 45 Alpine tribes that had harassed Roman travelers for centuries. This massive structure was originally 50 meters (160 feet) tall, built with a square base of local limestone and topped with a circular colonnade of 24 Doric columns. Watch as the structure is crowned with a stepped pyramidal roof and a bronze statue of Augustus himself. The Dry Disclaimer: This is an artistic, AI-driven reconstruction of the Trophy of Augustus as it appeared in 6 BC. While we’ve followed the proportions of the square base and the Doric colonnade found in the restored ruins today, the exact design of the pyramidal top and the bronze statue are based on archaeological models. It’s a cinematic tribute to Roman frontier power—please don't try to haul 5-ton limestone blocks up a French mountain without a Roman military labor force. #shorts #ancientrome #architecture #history #augustus #engineering #france #laturbie #monument #timelapse #archaeology

For 65 years, the battered body of an unidentified young boy found in a cardboard box in Philadelphia was one of America’s most haunting cold cases. In December 2022, he was finally given a name. Quick Facts The Victim: Joseph Augustus Zarelli (born Jan 13, 1953). He was 4 years old at the time of his death. Discovery: February 25, 1957, in the Fox Chase section of Philadelphia. Condition: Found naked, severely malnourished, covered in bruises, and crudely shorn of hair. He was wrapped in a blanket inside a J.C. Penney bassinet box. Cause of Death: Homicide by blunt force trauma. The Breakthrough After decades of dead ends, police exhumed the body in 2019 to apply modern forensic techniques. Genetic Genealogy: Investigators used DNA to find distant relatives and build a family tree, eventually locating his birth parents (both now deceased). Identification: On December 8, 2022, police publicly announced his identity, noting that he has living half-siblings who were unaware of his existence. Current Status Identity: Solved. Homicide: Unsolved. The investigation remains active. Police hope that knowing the boy’s name will help old neighbors or acquaintances remember details that could lead to the killer, though the passage of time makes prosecution difficult. #realcrime #numbed #truecrime #crime #realstory
