SQWe have struggled long and hard with squash vine borers here at @square_inch_farm. Since moving to Alabama and discovering these terrible pests that are very prevalent in the southeastern US, we have tried various things to combat them. This year, thanks to inspiration from @pawpawridge, we also added height to the mix. By training the plants to grow vertically up a stake, rather than sprawl across the ground, we can spot the borers before too much damage is done.
This is also allowing us to grow more plants in a smaller space, which is always a winner in a raised bed garden! 👏
We have also noticed that the pollinators are all over these plants in the mornings-the flowers stand out and are accessible to our flying garden staffers.
