BLS stands for Basic Life Support, and as a nurse, the BLS CPR guidelines are crucial to understand!
➡️ Step 1: Scene Safety
Before anything else, ensure the scene is safe to enter. Look out for hazards like electrical wires, fire, traffic, etc.
➡️ Step 2: Responsiveness
Tap and shout to check if the person is responsive. Call out loudly, “Hey, hey, are you okay?” while tapping their shoulder. Look for any movement, groaning, or eye movement.
➡️ Step 3: Emergency Services
If there’s no response or abnormal responses, call 911 or delegate someone to do so. Ask someone to get an AED if available.
➡️ Step 4: Assess Breathing + Pulse
Check the carotid pulse on the side of the neck while looking for chest rise or abnormal gasping. Assess for no longer than 10 seconds!
🩺 If no pulse or abnormal breathing (gasping/no chest rise), START CPR with 30 compressions to 2 breaths.
⭐️ Effective CPR Tips
• Rate of 100-120 compressions per minute
• Depth of 2-2.4 inches
• Allow full chest recoil after each compression
• Check pulse every 2 minutes (5 cycles)
🔋 Use the AED ASAP
Turn it on, place the pads, and follow prompts. If a shock is advised, clear the patient by ensuring no one is touching them. Resume CPR right after the shock if instructed.
🔄 Continue this cycle until help arrives or the patient becomes responsive.
