I appreciate much of what this sister is saying. Folks won’t be able to say we didn’t sound the alarm! #Repost @jicejohnson with @use.repost ・・・ Time is not on our side. So let’s talk about what that actually means in practical terms. When I say the rules are being rewritten, here’s what’s actually happening: ∙ Global supply chains are fracturing and rebuilding regionally RIGHT NOW ∙ AI is automating jobs faster than predicted & Black workers are 40% more likely to be in high-risk positions ∙ Traditional banking is tightening credit exactly when we need it most ∙ Everything costs more, and Black households spend higher percentages on essentials ∙ The global order that’s existed since WWII is collapsing in real time This isn’t theory. This is Monday. CONSOLIDATING RESOURCES IS AN UNDERUTILIZED STRATEGY 🚨🚨🚨 We can’t afford scattered individual efforts anymore. We need collective leverage, coordinated action, and strategic deployment of what we actually have. LOW-HANGING FRUIT - THINGS WE CAN DO RIGHT NOW: 1️⃣ Pool resources for essentials Create buying collectives for food, supplies, household goods. Use collective purchasing power to negotiate better pricing. This is basic mutual aid infrastructure. This can be done with a simple MOU. 2️⃣ Redirect spending to Black-owned businesses Even if it costs 5-10% more, keep those dollars circulating in our communities. Every dollar that stays with us is power. 3️⃣ Build skill-sharing networks Who has legal knowledge? Medical skills? Trades expertise? Digital skills? MAP IT. SHARE IT. USE IT. PSA- I have an entrepreneur community I’m growing. Link in my bio. 4️⃣ Cash reserves NOW If you don’t have 3-6 months of operating expenses saved, that’s your immediate priority. Not new programs. Cash. 5️⃣ Audit your subscriptions and recurring costs Cancel everything that isn’t directly generating revenue or serving an essential function. Redirect that money to reserves or productive use. 6️⃣ Get your documents in order Passports, birth certificates, business formation docs, tax returns—digitized, backed up, accessible. If you need to move fast, you can’t be hunting for paperwork.

In this archival interview from 1976, a young man explains his job, pay, and daily routine while working for a white family in Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. He describes working as what was then commonly referred to as a “garden boy,” a term widely used during the colonial era that reflects the social hierarchy and labor dynamics that existed at the time. The interview offers a glimpse into the everyday life of domestic workers during the final years of white minority rule in Rhodesia. His account details the type of work he performed, the wages he received, and the rhythms of daily life under a system where race largely determined one’s position in society. Such archival footage has become increasingly valuable for understanding the lived experiences of ordinary people during a period of profound political and social transition in southern Africa. The term itself, now considered outdated and offensive, serves as a linguistic artifact of the colonial structures that shaped relationships between white landowners and Black workers. The interview preserves a personal perspective on an era that would soon end with Zimbabwe’s independence in 1980.

At the @lablackworkercenter, we fight every day to expand access to quality jobs, protect Black workers from discrimination, and build real pathways to economic justice. ✊🏾 Right now, we’re deeply involved in LA’s City Charter reform, the first major update in 100+ years. This process will shape how our City hires, promotes, and supports workers for generations, including long-standing barriers in the civil service system that have kept Black workers out. We’re working closely with the City’s Personnel Committee and mobilizing Black workers and community members to stay informed, engaged, and at the table as decisions are made. Did you know the act of tipping in the USA has deep racial undertones? 💭 From emancipation to today, tipping has been a practice rooted in racial and economic control. 🏛️ In low-wage industries—disproportionately made up of Black workers, workers of color, and women—tipping became a tool for maintaining inequality, long before subminimum wages were enshrined into law. This two-tiered wage system has kept marginalized communities at a disadvantage, shaping the way we think about labor and compensation. #BlackHistoryMonth #blackhistory
