We wanted to capture the breadth of the collection by animating some of our favourite Australian native species. Viele Hände, schnelles Ende: Es dauerte nur rund eine halbe Stunde ⌛️, dann waren zwei Drittel unseres Reisfeldes in der Wilhelma verschwunden. Mit Unterstützung der Auszubildenden aus der Tierpflege machten sich unsere Gärtner*innen 🧑‍🌾 am Dienstagnachmittag an die Ernte der im Frühjahr an der @unihohenheim gezogenen und anschließend bei uns gepflanzten Süßgräser. Normalerweise würde zur Ernte das Wasser 💧 aus dem Reisfeld auf dem Asiatischen Schaubauernhof abgelassen werden. Allerdings leben in dem lehmigen Nass Libellenlarven. Aus Rücksicht auf die Insekten blieb das Feld deshalb überflutet. Die allererste Reisernte in der Wilhelma lief wie am Fließband. Jede*r Mitarbeitende hatte eine Aufgabe: Eine Gruppe stand im Feld und schnitt ✂️ mit Sicheln die Reispflanzen ab. Anschließend wurden die Halme zum Dreschen gebracht. Dort schlugen die Kolleg*innen sie auf Gitter. Beim Aufprall lösen sich die Körner aus den Rispen 🌾. Beim Sieben werden anschließend größere, verbliebene Strohreste aussortiert. Insgesamt konnten wir 20 Kilogramm Reis ernten 🥳. Ein Teil davon wird im nächsten Jahr für die neue Aussaat verwendet. Aus einem weiteren Teil soll versuchsweise an der Stuttgarter Müllerschule Speisereis 🍚 hergestellt werden. Dazu trocknet man die Körner unter anderem und entfernt die äußere Hülle, die sogenannten Spelzen. Bei uns wandert übrigens auch das Reisstroh nicht auf den Müll 👍. Stattdessen bekommen es unsere Tiere als hochwertiges Futter. Über diesen Snack konnten sich zum Beispiel unsere Vietnamesischen Hängebauchschweine, die Steinböcke und unsere Asiatischen Elefanten 🐘 freuen.
