HUCleft lip repair is traditionally done at about 3 months of age.
Some centers have moved this up to 2-4 weeks, once the child is doing well and gaining weight. There may be some benefits to feeding and weight gain doing this on the earlier side.
On the other hand, some other surgeons are pushing the cleft lip repair back towards 9-12 months. This is to mitigate concerns about the effects of general anesthesia on the developing brain.
I get into these details with families in prenatal and initial visits, and work with them to decide on what’s best for them and their child.
For this patient, the lip was repaired at 3 months, and she is seen in her after photos in preparation for her cleft palate repair at 9 months.

THWait for it….I wondered for months what my older kids would say when they met my daughter who was cleft affected. I was scared they would say something about her appearance. I played this moment over and over during my pregnancy and was prepared for all sorts of answers!
I knew they hadn’t seen any babies with clefts in person. We wanted them to understand that people are born with differences, and that’s ok!
💖Toddlers, always on the snack patrol! My two older kids have loved and embraced our families journey.
A few things that helped prepare them for their sisters journey:
💖Reading books about clefts to them
💖Showing them photographs of babies with clefts and talking about how people are created differently.
💖Spending dedicated special time with the older kiddos because their baby sister did require some extra care when she was born.
💖Getting them involved in her cleft care.
💖Sometimes telling baby “I’m going to put you down so I can read with your sister” Even though the baby doesn’t necessarily understand the language, it helps the older kids understand you are putting them first sometimes as well!

OPWhen Yong Lin was born his mother, Changqin, cried for days. She didn't understand her child's condition; it was relatives who told her that it was a #cleft condition and that surgery was possible to treat it.

GRThe days leading up to these surgeries have been difficult. It’s bittersweet. When he’s good he’s so good, but when he’s bad he really needs this. Fingers crossed that the laryngeal cleft injection works and stimulates growth.
