Cold capping can be a powerful tool to help women keep their hair during breast cancer treatment. I was told I had a 50/50 chance it would work because I was on one of the most intense chemo regimens. Unfortunately, it didn’t work for me. By the third week after my first dose, I lost 80% of my hair in just two days. But just because it didn’t work for me doesn’t mean it won’t work for you. Everyone’s experience is different. doing Cold Caps. THERE. WAS. HOPE!!! Cold Capping is extremely expensive and it takes A LOT of work depending on the type of Cold Capping you do. What I wish is that Cold Capping was part of the chemo process to all the patients so it’s not all out of pocket, but it’s not. David knew I was struggling with the hair thing and he was going to do everything for me to help me keep my hair. Doctors said after my first chemo I would lose all my hair 😭 So I started the cold caps and did it for 3 Chemo treatments. I remember after my first Chemo - 17 days after to be exact I was taking a shower and a HUGE lump of hair fell to the shower floor. 😭 That wasn’t suppose to happen - I called David bawling. He came home and cleaned it up and I laid on my bed the rest of the afternoon just crying. Losing your hair is HARD HARD!! Trying to save it - is what most people want to do, but knowing what I know now this is my advice … Cold Caps is EXPENSIVE! If you have the extra funds to spend it on cold caps and you won’t be upset if it doesn’t work (& your money was wasted) then do it. If you can’t afford it - SHAVE IT OFF! I know easier said than done but it’s the facts. My hair saga was worse than the chemo. Cold Cals for some reason didn’t work for me. I was devastated but when I finally decided to shave it off (on my terms - no one else telling me) … I felt so FREE!! Once I had a family head shaving party, even tho so hard emotionally - I finally felt relaxed and it wasn’t a worry anymore of “is my hair going to fall out?” I get this question all the time on “to Cold Cap or not?” Everyone’s story is different & hope my story helps you when making your decision 🎗️ Praying for you in the hard 🩷 #amysarmy

And here I am, showing that sometimes it can work. 🤍 Cold capping isn’t easy. It’s not a guarantee. And everyone’s response is different. But for me, it helped me hold onto a piece of myself during one of the hardest seasons of my life. Cold capping was my quiet act of defiance. When I was diagnosed with estrogen-positive breast cancer, I chose to use the PAXMAN scalp cooling system during chemo to try and keep my hair. @scalpcooling 🧊 It’s a medical cooling cap worn before, during, and after infusions that lowers the temperature of the scalp, constricts blood vessels, and reduces how much chemotherapy reaches the hair follicles. The science makes sense, but in reality, it’s still not guaranteed. ⚠️ I was told by multiple people, including doctors, not to get my hopes up. And they’re right about one thing: it doesn’t work for everyone. Some people keep most of their hair, some lose quite a bit, and some lose it all. For many, though, it can still support faster or fuller regrowth if you end up losing most of your hair. For me, it worked, and I kept all of my hair. And in a season where everything felt out of my control, that mattered more than I can explain. It wasn’t about vanity, but about identity. I’m incredibly grateful I had access, and that I could access financial assistance to cover the whole treatment, because I know how costly it can be without it. So here are some options to help fund the treatment if you know anyone going through these tough times: → As of now, in the state of New York, insurance plans are required to cover scalp cooling for cancer patients. That’s huge. This is a reminder you can get informed with your plan and advocate for yourself. In other states, access still varies, and the out-of-pocket cost can be thousands of dollars. → That's why there are also organizations you can reach out to for help with funding support, including: • The Rapunzel Project • HairToStay @coolerheadsprevail • The Pink Fund @thepinkfund • Sharsheret @sharsheretofficial No one should have to choose between financial stress and feeling a tiny bit like themselves during treatment. I was told this might happen since I was on the strongest and toughest form of chemotherapy for breast cancer. I was super depressed about it and decided to take control of the situation and shave it all off! My amazing husband, daughter, and son all took turns with the clippers. Round 3 is DONE… which means I’m officially halfway there. 🥹 This one came with a little extra anxiety after how sick I was during round 2. But at the same time, there’s something so relieving about being able to say halfway. Only 3 more left. Before and during this treatment I prayed very specifically — for strength in my body, better control of the GI side effects, protection from dehydration, and just a little more energy to get through it. I truly believe in the power of prayer, and I know the Lord will see me through every single one of these treatments. Cold capping is definitely getting more intense (those first 15 minutes are no joke 🥶), but it’s nothing I can’t breathe and pray through. If you’re cold capping — don’t give up. The hardest part is short, and it does get more tolerable. And my hair is still… hairing 😂 Thinner? Yes. Still here? Also yes. So incredibly grateful. Praying each round gets a little easier and each shed gets a little lighter. 3 down. 3 to go. 💪🏼 #TCHP #BreastCancerWarrior #ColdCappingJourney #FaithOverFear #breastcancerfighter

This isn’t easy to say, but my hair is — and probably always will be — a big part of my identity. Reliving what it took to not lose it still makes me cry. I nearly broke down in tears putting this video together because reliving the trauma of losing almost all of my hair still hits hard. And I know every breast cancer patient approaches it differently. Some don’t care and shave their heads right away. I respect that completely. But for me, that felt like giving in to the cancer. I wanted to fight for every little piece of the old me… the pre-breast-cancer me. I was determined not to let cancer take more than it already had. Call me crazy for holding on and doing all the things — but if I hadn’t, I wouldn’t have met Marla, my hair extension queen 👑 @slayedbyshears I wouldn’t have felt confident walking into the office, being on camera, or showing up as a company spokesperson when I needed to most. I also never would’ve known I kind of love myself with bangs… or that in my mid-40s, I’d be embracing my naturally curly hair all over again 🌀 Cold capping was hard — really hard — but I truly believe it helped save my hair follicles and allowed my natural hair to grow back faster. Now, 3 years after chemo, radiation, and a lumpectomy, my extensions are completely out, and for the first time in a long time… this is all mine. My natural curls. My natural hair. My next chapter.
