DRI am often asked about recommendations for combination skin so I’ve finally created a post to address the topic. But first, what does it mean to have combination skin? The most common example of combination skin is when you have an oily t-zone (forehead, down the nose to the chin) with dry skin on the cheeks. There can be other ways it appears as well and when it comes to your skincare it can help to adapt in order to appropriately target oily and dry areas.
In general I recommend the same basic skincare routine to someone with combination skin, which would include a cleanser (gentle or foaming depending on degree of oiliness or dryness), an antioxidant, moisturizer (as needed) and SPF in the morning, and then cleanser, retinol and moisturizer at night. Modifications to consider for combination skin would be the use of a salicylic acid product to target the oily t-zone. This could be in the form of a cleanser, toner or leave-on exfoliant like Paula’s Choice BHA 2%, or an exfoliating pad (Peter Thomas Roth, First Aid Beauty and ZO all have versions of these). The second adjustment is a simple but important one: be sure to focus additional moisturization and ingredients that soothe and help the skin barrier (e.g. products with ceramides or colloidal oatmeal) in the areas of dry skin.

🧴 Kiehl’s ultra facial cream wins but I was torn between CeraVe’s Moisturizing Cream vs Neutrogena Hydro Boost as well
😎all of these are great sunscreens but I reflexively tapped the EltaMD UV Clear
😏night masks for pores are alright but an extra step to my nighttime routine that I have been skipping although there are some great clay masks out there!
💪hard to beat the versatile aquaphor - use this on your lips before bed (don’t use lip scrubs for lip care)

the best way to do this is to notice how your skin feels at the end of a normal day for you:
- do you have extra shine or extra oil
- where is the oil located?
- does your skin feel dry or tight
- do you notice your makeup has broken down from the oil
- does your skin feel rough or flaky?
all of these are questions to consider when analyzing your own skin!!
