On the Silver Globe is one of the most famous films ever censored by a government. Director Andrzej Żuławski began shooting it in 1976, but the Polish communist authorities suddenly shut down the production in 1977, claiming it was “too expensive” and “politically problematic.” In reality, the film’s themes — religion, power, and manipulation of society — were seen as dangerously symbolic critiques of authoritarian rule. The government even ordered sets and costumes to be destroyed so the movie could never be finished. More than 80% of the film had already been shot. Years later, after political pressure eased, Żuławski recovered the surviving footage and finally released the film in 1988, filling missing scenes with narration explaining what should have happened. Because of this unusual production history, the film became a legend of world cinema — often called one of the greatest “unfinished masterpieces” ever made. It’s not just a sci-fi epic. Thanks to amazing boutique labels like @kinolorber and @kinocult my collection has grown into something far more diverse than I ever imagined! From cult classics and gritty genre films to hidden gems and unique cinematic oddities, these labels constantly introduce me to movies that keep the hobby exciting. There are now so many unique films in my collection that I cannot wait to dive 🏊‍♂️ into, and that’s the beauty of collecting. Every shelf holds something new to experience, whether it’s a wild exploitation film, an underrated thriller, or a fascinating piece of cinema history. Kino Lorber and Kino Cult always seem to find the kinds of movies that make you say, “How have I never seen this before?” ❤️ Huge appreciation to these labels for continuing to release incredible titles for collectors and movie lovers.
