PRCushing syndrome can result from several conditions that lead to excessive cortisol levels in the body:
1. Pituitary Adenomas: These benign tumors in the pituitary gland secrete excessive adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), causing the adrenal glands to produce more cortisol.
2. Adrenal Tumors: Tumors in the adrenal glands, whether benign or malignant, can independently produce excessive cortisol.
3. Ectopic ACTH Syndrome: Some tumors, often found in the lungs, can produce ACTH outside of the pituitary gland, leading to increased cortisol production by the adrenal glands.
4. Prolonged Corticosteroid Use: Long-term use of corticosteroid medications, like prednisone, can cause Cushing syndrome.

Stoffwechselkrankheit Nr. 1: Diabetes Mellitus (Zuckerkrankheit)
Der Typ-2-Diabetes resultiert aus einer erworbenen Insulinresistenz. Das Hormon ist in dem Fall zwar vorhanden, kann aber wegen der Resistenz nicht wirken. Ein ungesunder Lebensstil mit Übergewicht und Bewegungsmangel ist hierfür oft die Ursache. Diabetes führt dazu, dass der Körper keinen Zucker aus dem Blut aufnehmen kann. Dieser wird dann vermehrt über den Urin ausgeschieden, was der Krankheit auch ihren Namen gab. Es kommt zu einer übermäßigen Urinausscheidung, verstärktem Harndrang und Durst.
Stoffwechselkrankheit Nr. 2: Cushing-Syndrom
Das Cushing-Syndrom wird dadurch verursacht, dass im Körper zu viele Glucocorticoide vorhanden sind. Cortisol steigert dazu den abbauenden Stoffwechsel von Fett, Muskulatur und Knochen. Das Cortison sorgt für eine Umverteilung des Fettes und führt somit zu einer sogenannten Stammfettsucht.
Stoffwechselkrankheit Nr. 3: Mukoviszidose
Das Hauptproblem der Erkrankung ist, dass der Körper hier sehr zähflüssige Sekrete produziert. Studien zeigen, dass Mukoviszidose den Stoffwechsel aber vor allem durch eine gestörte Aufspaltung und Aufnahme von Nahrungsbestandteilen im Darm beeinflusst. Die Zähflüssigkeit des Bauchspeichels behindert aber die Freisetzung der Enzyme in den Darm und somit die Verdauung.
Stoffwechselkrankheit Nr. 4: Hypercholesterinämie
Hierbei handelt es sich um eine Fettstoffwechselstörung, bei der der Cholesterinspiegel im Blut stark erhöht sein kann. Dadurch können sich Plaques und eine Atherosklerose bilden. Das kann schwerwiegende Folgen für Dich haben, denn die Plaques verengen die Blutbahn und steigern das Risiko für Herzinfarkte und Schlaganfälle.
Stoffwechselkrankheit Nr. 5: Gicht
Die Krankheit entsteht durch eine sogenannte Hyperurikämie. Dazu kommt es, wenn der Harnsäurespiegel im Blut erhöht ist.

DROne of the things that caught me most off guard during treatment was seeing my face change.
Not because I’m vain — but because your face is how you recognise yourself. And suddenly, I didn’t.
Steroids were necessary, but they brought fluid retention, weight gain, and that rounded “moon face” that stared back at me in the mirror. Chemotherapy changed my skin too — dryness, sensitivity, dullness, breakouts.
Then I lost a lot of my hair. Not just on my head, but my eyebrows and lashes — the subtle frame that makes your face feel like you. Without them, I felt exposed in a way I wasn’t prepared for.
I’ve always relied on positive visualisation during hard times — picturing myself on the other side, whole and familiar again. But this time, I struggled. When you can’t recognise your own face, it’s surprisingly hard to visualise yourself at all.
And layered on top of that was the emotional toll. Months of fear, exhaustion, uncertainty, and yes — a lot of tears. That deep pain and sadness shows on your face too. But not as weakness, but as honesty.
As a doctor, I understood why these changes happen.
As a patient, I felt the grief of watching my reflection change in real time.
If you’re going through this and barely recognise yourself some days — you’re not alone.
Your face isn’t betraying you. It’s carrying you through survival.

ARClinical Presentation of Cushing’s Syndrome
Cushing’s Syndrome occurs due to chronic exposure to excess cortisol, and its manifestations affect multiple systems in the body.
Typical clinical features include:
• Central (truncal) obesity
• Moon face (rounded facial appearance)
• Buffalo hump (fat accumulation over the upper back)
• Purple abdominal striae (>1 cm wide)
• Thin, fragile skin with easy bruising
• Proximal muscle weakness
• Hypertension
• Hyperglycemia / steroid-induced diabetes
Other possible findings:
• Acne and hirsutism
• Menstrual irregularities
• Mood changes (depression, irritability)
• Increased risk of infections
• Osteoporosis and fractures
⚠️ Because many symptoms develop gradually, the diagnosis is often delayed.
Early recognition is essential to prevent long-term complications.
