Not looking so “cuddly” if you’re the crab on the dinner plate… ⁠🦀🍽️⁠ ⁠ Masters of deception, cuttlefish are like little magicians that employ various visual tricks to confuse their prey (and unlike most magicians, also use them to avoid getting eaten).⁠ ⁠ Scientist @save_tonic and his team have been researching these hypnotic cephalopods for over a year, and have documented four different body patterns that cuttlefish use on their prey - appearing to mimic drifting corals or leave to become virtually invisible to their prey. The Last Survivor This Australian giant cuttlefish is nearing the end of its short 1 year lifespan and its arms are falling apart! If you look closely you can see the famous underwater motorcycle of Cabbage Tree Bay. Recorded back in early spring when these cuttlefish expire after an intense winter mating season! This season is so intense that they don’t even eat for several months, and focus solely on mating. This was the last one I found in the bay and it was swimming long distances in search of mating female, yet was unsuccessful as they had all passed away already. This was filmed with my @gopro 13 in Cabbage Tree Bay, Sydney #ocean #wildlife #australia #cuttlefish #giantcuttlefish

Squid are fast-moving predators, while cuttlefish are slower and move by undulating long fins on the sides of their bodies.
