Dahlias are an absolute staple for me when it comes to summer and fall flowers! All named varieties start from a tuber which you plant 12 inches apart and 4-6 inches deep after your last frost. Good draining soil, sunshine and regular water are essential as it grows and they also benefit from staking as many get over 5 ft tall, although actual height will depend on the variety. All varieties require the same care though. Doesn’t matter what flower blooms, if it’s a dahlia, they all need the same care in growing. If you’re new to dahlias, a fun fact is that every single tuber planted in the ground will also make a clump of tubers while it’s flowering away. You can divide those tubers up and get even more plants the following year. If you have questions on growing them, follow along for tips or let me know in the comments! 💐 . . . . . #dahlias #flowers #flowerfarm #dahlia #cottagegarden

Dahlias can be easily multiplied by taking cuttings in spring. 🌱 Once you’ve potted up your tubers, cut the tip of a healthy stem. 🌱 Remove the lower foliage, and if the remaining leaves are large, cut each leaf in half. 🌱 Reducing the foliage helps prevent moisture loss and will contribute to your success. 🌱 Dahlias are very easy to propagate, but avoid taking cuttings in full, direct sun. 🌱 Cuttings don’t need much nutrition, so for propagation I use peat-free compost mixed with a little horticultural grit. This creates a light, free-draining growing medium. 🌱 Now it’s time to water the cuttings and wait for roots to form. Store them in a frost-free place, out of direct sunlight. 🌱 Dahlia cuttings usually root within 3–6 weeks, giving you free plants—and plenty of reasons to smile. If you have any questions, feel free to ask in comments below.👇

FAQs- How many cuttings can you take off one tuber? It depends on the variety + your room temps + how many eyes are on the tuber! (Some tubers may send up multiple shoots at one time! Some just one at a time.) Some tubers “wake up” quicker than others too. Normally you can get at least 4 cuttings, but up to 8 or so in this time period. 2.Can you plant the original tuber? Yes! Taking cuttings for just a couple months shouldn’t exhaust the original tuber*. You can plant it like normal (buried under the soil) around your last frost date. *I have never taken over 8 cuttings as a precaution. I have heard dahlia experts say taking more than 10 isn’t great if you want the original tuber healthy, but let me know your experience! 3.Could you take cuttings from cuttings? (Inception!) Yes! Also- cuttings will bloom a week or two before tubers planted on the same date. They are a little ahead which means flowers sooner! They will create their own tuber clumps that you can divide in the fall too. SO MANY DAHLIAS 😍 Let me know if you have any questions - happy to help! Not shown in reel but sanitize tools (I use bleach) between each cutting! #growflowers #garden #dahlias #backyardgardening

This is controversial but… I have to start by saying this is NOT the way that people grow dahlias this is just the way that I have done it the last few years to get my flowers early! Dahlias are easy to grow and you can even plant the tubers in the ground so if your a beginner don’t complicate things I do 🤪 It’s extra work, it’s unnecessary but I love this method 🫢 For many years I felt like August would come and I still was waiting for flowers, sometimes as late as September and I still didn’t have many flowering so I decided to experiment getting a bigger plant earlier so that it was ready to plant out once the spring bulbs were done! It worked for me the last few years so I will continue to do it! 🌱When my new tubers arrive (today) 🤭 I add compost to the bag they have come in or add them to a sandwich bag! 🌱Add a small amount of compost that’s not too damp and lay the tubers on top! Put them on a warm bright windowsill. I put mine on a heat mat. 🌱Leave bag open and regularly check to see the tubers happy and not too damp, eyes will start to swell and be visible in about 2-4 weeks! 🌱When the shoots start to come I top the bag up with compost so the have more space to grow! I will pot my new ones up tomorrow and show you the whole process! 🌷Comment below if you’d like any of my links sent to you 😘 COLLECTION- To pre order my latest seeds NEWLANDS - To pre order bedding plants MEMBERSHIP- Join My Beginner Gardening Club COURSE - Buy my ‘Beginner Gardener Course’ COLLECTION- Pre order my spring seed collection BULBZ - Link to bargain dahlias and summer bulbs SEEDZ- My fav seed supplier BLOOMZ- FREE Dahlia Grow Along STORE- My Amazon Storefront Follow me @lookinsidemygarden for: 🌸 Daily gardening on stories 🌱Beginner gardener tips 🪴 Grow alongs ✨ Garden transformations 💕Life, laughs and community #gardening#gardeningtips#garden

How To Plant Dahlias!🪷🌼 Essentials: Your Favourite Dahlia Tubers Multi-Purpose Compost Dahlia Feed (to be used at a later date) Plastic pots Method: 💧Soak the tubers in luke-warm water for 10-30 minutes. This helps rehydrate them and speeds up sprouting. 🌱Plant them into pots with multi-purpose compost, leaving the neck poking slightly above the surface. Planting them into pots early allows the Dahlias to grow in a more stable environment, away from pests. 🪴Give them a good water and leave them in a bright, frost-free, and warm location such as a greenhouse, conservatory, or warm windowsill. Doing this will give your Dahlias the best start before planting them out in the ground, especially if your garden is a gastropod’s paradise! It’s not always necessary, and if your garden or allotment is largely untouched by slugs, you may be able to plant your Dahlias straight out. 🌸 #dahlias #beginnergardening #beginnergardener #inthegarden #howto

Dahlias for free? Yes, please! 🙋‍♀️ Taking cuttings is a quick, easy and inexpensive way to increase the number of dahlias you’re growing this season. If your budget doesn’t allow for more tubers or you just want to add more plants to your collection, this hack is for you! To take cuttings, start with a dormant tuber. “Wake up” the tuber by potting it up (I start several at a time in plastic bins) and placing it in on a heat mat or in a warm, bright location. Keep the soil moist but not soaking wet and in a few weeks you’ll see shorts emerge from the eyes of the tuber. When each shoot is about 2-3 inches long, gently wiggle it off of the tuber or cut it as close to the base as you can. I tap the cut end in rooting hormone (though I’ve heard that’s not 100% necessary) before sticking it into a fresh pot of soil. Then it’s back under the grow lights where the cutting will develop roots and eventually form its own tubers. Voila, a new plant! By starting them early, each tuber can produce 5 or more cuttings before the season begins. If you’ve got 10 tubers on hand, that’s 50 new plants! This hack will also work on cuttings that you’ve “pinched” from your baby dahlias, so if you’re late to the game and your last frost date has arrived, get those tubers in the ground and take cuttings in a few weeks. In addition to increasing your own dahlia stash, this hack also makes for a great gift. I start cuttings for the ladies in my life as Mother’s Day gifts and share the dahlia love. 🌸 I’m planning to bulk up my stash of Sweet Nathalie this season. What tuber can you never have enough of?

If your dahlias are starting to sprout then here’s how to take cuttings to increase your dahlias for free 🌱🌱🌱 (See my previous reel about encouraging your dahlias to sprout) - Choose a strong looking shoot that is 7-8cm tall - Cut the shoot, taking a tiny bit of tuber with it (the tuber contains plant growth hormones which will help it to root) - Remove the lower leaves of the cutting to reduce water loss - Fill a pot with a well draining compost mix (add perlite, vermiculite or grit for drainage) - Make a hole in the edge of the pot using a pencil or stick and push the cutting into the hole - Keep the compost moist but not too wet to encourage rooting - Wait a couple of weeks for roots to form (DON’T pull the cutting out to check for roots - it can damage them) ➡️ For more information check my blog post on my website or my latest YouTube video (links in bio)
