DEVIL PRESS - Why Technique Matters 🔍 When done right, the devil press is one smooth motion from the ground to overhead. ✅ Correct technique: •As you drop down, place the dumbbells shoulder-width apart and let your chest fall between them. •From the bottom, use your hips and momentum to drive the dumbbells up in a snatch-like motion, straight from the floor to overhead. Result: one explosive movement, minimal strain, and maximum efficiency. ❌ Common mistakes: Placing the dumbbells too close together, so your chest lands on them instead of between, reducing stability and flow. Muscling the dumbbells up into a clean, then pressing overhead turning it into two separate lifts instead of one fluid snatch. Result: more time, more effort, more fatigue. 💡 Why it matters: The correct setup keeps the movement fast and energy efficient, which is crucial in high rep workouts. Two Types of Devil Press 😈 The Devil Press is both a villain and a favourite. Here are TWO ways you can approach this movement. 🚀 Faster Reps This version is effectively a Hang Snatch once you get your feet planted, it’s faster because the Dumbbells travel straight from between the legs to above the head in one movement. Be warned, this version requires strength and skill and will be more energy expensive for most! ⚙️ Efficient Reps If I’m working in bigger sets or trying to be more efficient to excel on whatever movement comes next… I opt for this version. This time you move the Dumbbell from between the legs, to the shoulder (like a hang clean) before using your legs again to drive it overhead like a push press or jerk. Tip here is to catch the Dumbbells on the shoulder in a quarter squat position so you are loaded and ready to drive them overhead in one go. 🕳️ The Way Down The last point to consider in both movements is how you get the Dumbbells from overhead (point B) back to the floor (point A) My preference is to take some of the momentum out of the Dumbbells by cushioning the fall at the hips before hitting the floor. The alternative is guiding them from overhead, straight to the floor… in my opinion although this is quicker, I feel like I loose control and exert unwanted energy in the process. Pick your poison!
