Your insurance company should not be making medical decisions for you. They should be facilitating payment for covered services and supporting you in your health journey.
Today I did bilateral DIEP Flaps for a patient who had risk reducing mastectomies. Even though this patient is in her 40’s, has a strong family history of breast cancer, and carries the ATM gene mutation, the insurnace company declined coverage for her surgery citing NCCN guidelines (referenced in my video)
We didn’t accept this, we pushed back, and our patient was able to get the risk-reducing surgery approved! 💪

THGet relief in 3 gentle moves.
If you’re recovering from any type of breast cancer surgery (especially DIEP/TRAM flap reconstruction) and experiencing abdominal swelling, bloating, or tightness these 3 gentle exercises can help you feel more comfortable.
1️⃣ Diaphragmatic Breathing: Place your hands on your abdomen. Inhale slowly through your nose for 6 seconds, letting your belly expand into your hands. Exhale for 4–6 seconds through your nose or softly pursed lips, feeling your belly gently draw inward. Repeat 10–15 breaths.
2️⃣ Windshield Wipers: Lie on your back with your knees bent, feet mat width apart, and arms out to your side. Inhale to drop your knees gently to the right. Exhale to return to center. Inhale to the left. Exhale back to center. Repeat 5x on each side.
3️⃣ Pelvic Tilts: Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Gently arch your low back (pelvis tilts away), then slowly flatten your low back into the floor (pelvis tilts toward you). Small, controlled movement. Repeat 10x.

A common misconception is that rehabilitation is only needed if severe pain or major limitations show up after breast cancer treatment. In reality, Breast Cancer Rehab can support you through every stage; before, during, and after treatments.
Before treatment even begins, rehab can help your body (and mind) gently prepare for what’s ahead, whether that’s surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation therapy.
This is called prehabilitation, or “prehab.” Prehab is an empowering way to take an active role in your care by improving your strength, mobility, and overall resilience before treatment starts. Preparing your body ahead of time can lead to a smoother recovery, fewer setbacks, and better outcomes. Unlike traditional rehab, which usually starts after treatment, prehab helps you start from a place of strength.
Prehab often includes targeted exercises for mobility, flexibility, and strength, in addition to education on safe movement and body mechanics. The goal is to help your body better handle the physical demands of treatment.
In this video, you’ll see a breast cancer patient doing a modified core exercise as part of their prehab program in preparation for DIEP flap surgery.
Since a DIEP flap procedure uses abdominal tissue to reconstruct the breast(s), core strength can be temporarily affected. Targeted core work beforehand can help them go into surgery stronger and more prepared, supporting a smoother, faster recovery and lowering the risk of complications.
