Here’s what a veterinary behaviorist told me about the #1 mistake dog owners make 👇 ✅ Constant unpredictable touch and interaction. Most people pet, grab, call, touch, pick up, and interrupt their dogs whenever they feel like it. But here’s the problem: to your dog, unpredictability = danger. Their nervous system never fully relaxes because the next touch could come at any second. As she put it: “Love without timing feels like a threat.” ✅ The hidden signs of nervous system overload. She showed me footage of dogs in “normal homes” — dilated pupils, micro-freezes, tail flicks, tongue flicks. These aren’t signs of fear. They’re signs of chronic low-level vigilance. The dog’s brain can’t downshift when affection arrives like an ambush. ✅ The worst habit: drive-by petting. Walking past your dog and touching them without warning forces their startle reflex to fire hundreds of times per week. Over time, this doesn’t build love — it builds reactivity, clinginess, or sudden aggression. Not from trauma, but from nervous system exhaustion. “Pets don’t get tired of love,” she said. “They get tired of being surprised.” ✅ The fix: invitation-based interaction. Sit. Wait. Let your dog initiate. When they approach, offer your hand for scent first, then touch. Within days, their nervous system recalibrates. They sleep deeper, startle less, and show calmer, more grounded affection. Safety isn’t built by affection alone — it’s built by predictability. ✅ Her final line hit hard: “If you want a calm dog, stop petting on your terms. Pet on theirs.” The moment you give your dog control over when connection happens, their stress chemistry collapses. Most owners don’t have “bad dogs.” They have overstimulated ones. 🌟 The takeaway: Your dog doesn’t need more love. They need more predictable love. Double-tap ❤️ if this changed how you see affection, and share it with a dog parent who needs to hear this. Follow @tomdavis to train your dog more effectively! Reactive dogs can shift their entire body weight forward and almost lift themselves off the ground when their arousal spikes. It looks dramatic, but it’s simply information a window into their threshold, stress levels, and communication. With the right structure, timing, and guidance, even the most explosive reactivity can become manageable, predictable, and eventually calm. #reactivedog #reactivitytraining #dogbehavior #caninecommunication #balancedtraining #dogtrainer #dogtrainingtips #dogtrainingjourney #caninelife #professionaltrainer #dogsofinstagram #australia

WHY DOGS KEEP PAWING THEIR FACE? When a dog is constantly pawing at their face like they’re trying to remove something, it’s usually a sign of discomfort or irritation — not just a random habit. Here’s what it can mean (from most common to serious): 👁️ 1. Eye irritation (VERY common) Dust, hair, or something stuck in eye Redness, watering, squinting 👉 They’re literally trying to “wipe” their eye 🦠 2. Allergies (super common in India) Food allergies or environmental (dust, pollen) Itchy face, licking paws, ear scratching 👉 Face pawing = itch they can’t reach properly 🦷 3. Dental pain (underrated cause) Tooth infection, gum pain Bad breath, not eating properly 👉 Pain radiates → they paw their face 🐜 4. Ticks / fleas near face or ears Especially around ears, cheeks Constant scratching + irritation 👂 5. Ear infection Shaking head + pawing face Smell or discharge from ears 👉 Many owners confuse this with “face issue” 🤢 6. Something stuck (urgent sometimes) Grass seed, small object, insect sting Sudden intense pawing 👉 If it started suddenly → check ASAP 🧠 7. Anxiety / stress (less common) Repetitive behavior No visible physical issue 🚨 WHEN TO WORRY Take it seriously if: • Red eyes or discharge • Swelling • Bleeding • Not eating • Pawing continuously for hours 👉 Don’t wait too long — can worsen fast ⚡ WHAT YOU SHOULD DO • Gently check eyes, ears, mouth • Clean visible dirt (ONLY if safe) • Avoid home remedies in eyes ⚠️ • If it continues → vet visit is best 💥 SIMPLE RULE 👉 Occasional pawing = normal 👉 Continuous / aggressive pawing = something is wrong Share this with other dog parents and follow @k9vitalityindia for more vet-backed tips, fun food ideas, and everything you need to raise a happy, healthy pup! #dogbehavior #doghabits #dogbehaviour #dogfacts #dogtips

River has been my teacher of lessons I might not have learned if they hadn’t have been necessary to function. He requires trust to even go on a walk, to get in a car, go through a doorway. There is no way around it, if you try to force him, control him or lure him he will at least be suspicious of you and at most use aggression when he feels cornered. There isn’t anything biddable about him. But…once you have his trust, once you are his safe space, often a conversation is all that’s needed to solve a problem whether that is verbal or with body language. You will also see underneath the suspicion and defensiveness is a very soft soul. Working with @punk_mutts to understand him felt like being given the key to a kingdom where most things just became easy. So yes a Village Dog can be a challenging dog to live with until you understand them and then they help you understand what all dogs deserve. *Village Dogs are the free roaming dogs you see around the world. They come from the original dogs before modern breeds existed. They are shaped by natural selection not human breeding. #villagedog #mydogmyfamily #reactivedog #doglessons #dogtrainingadvice #streetdog #dogsdeservebetter #pnwdogs #dogbehavior

Growling is typically a communication tool conveying “I want space.” It is often paired with a stiff body, facial tension, possibly a freeze, and other body language that is attempting to communicate a clear message depending on the context and scenario. A communication growl should always be listened to, never ignored or corrected, because it can be a precursor to what’s coming next to get the message across: a snap or bite. A growl is, often times, your smoke detector. Your dog’s way of indicating that things are not okay. But is this always the case? Nope! Sometimes growling is play, like in this Reel. (How fun is that for some confusing body language nuance 😅) So how do you know when it’s play versus when it’s serious? It comes down to knowing your individual dog, understanding body language, and looking at the rest of the picture. ➡️ Look at the context. Are you playing with them? Are they engaging with you? Have they gotten more hyped up as the game went on? ➡️ What other body language do you see? Are they stiff, tense, and whale eyeing? Are they moving away? Are they hunched over a toy when you attempt to take it? Do they snarl or snap? ➡️ When playing with another dog, are they constantly trying to get away from the other dog? Do they normally growl in play with other dogs? Are they also baring their teeth? Do they seem stiff and tense, or wiggly and relaxed? ➡️ Are they escalating to biting or snapping? Is it a quick growl, or continuous? When in doubt about if a growl is playful or communication (often labeled aggression), we err on the side of caution, gently interrupt the interaction, and assess what’s going on. ⚠️It is always a good idea to check in with a qualified professional when you are worried about your dog’s growling.⚠️ Learning body language is critical to know what your dog is saying in different situations. Does your dog growl during play? How did you realize it was a play growl and not a communication growl?
