POSTPARTUM Phewwweee it can hit you out of nowhere. I don’t say this to add more fear to that huge list of all the things you’re already trying to accomplish before baby gets here… but I will say that a postpartum support system will serve you far more than some of the other things on that list. Bump these things to the top of your “to do” 1. Prepare your bedroom. The nursing cart is worth getting and setting up, cozy sheets and blankets that feel luxurious do matter. Lighting that feels cozy for naps but bright enough during the day will make a difference for your mental health! Clear the clutter, spend a little extra time getting your bed and bathroom the way you like it 2. The first 40 days. I help my clients treat the first 40 days like a little post-birth cocoon. Think- cozy, snuggles, nap, warm foods. NOT getting back to life, chuch, social events. Postpartum was designed to be slow- that’s how you heal. Hunker down, and prepare to say “no” to life’s demands for just over a month. 3. 555 rule. This is a simple way to maximize rest st the beginning. 5 days in the bed, 5 days on the bed, 5 days near the bed. The goal is rest, (even if you’re not sleeping), snuggles, feeding yourself and your baby. 4. Meal train! Use mealtrain.com to send a link to all your friends and family! They can sign up for a day to bring a meal, let you know ahead of time what they’re bringing, and even send DoorDash gift cards that way. Ask for help. Receive it without guilt when it comes ❤️ 5. Find a lactation consultant in your area! You’re looking for an IBCLC. They are the most educated in lactation (many LCs at the hospital can be helpful but are not IBCLCs). 6. Soups. Make a few! Freeze them in individual servings! A nutrient dense warm lunch can CHANGE the course of a day postpartum. Comment “RECIPE” and I’ll send you my faves. 7. List of “go-to” people. People that can run to the store for you, bring over a coffee and have a chat, pick up an older sibling for school. Ask them ahead of time if it’s okay to text them for help. And accept it when they come! #postpartum #firsttimemom #doula #postpartumdoula #birthprep

If you’ll be welcoming a spring or summer baby here are the two things I recommend my doula clients understand BEFORE their baby is born 👇 1️⃣ SLEEP - babies are born with no circadian rhythm (❌ they don’t know day from night until 8-12 weeks). BUT…that doesn’t mean you’re destined for no sleep IF you understand how to get good sleep habits in place beginning the first day you bring your baby home. 🎥 comment “CUE” to see 5 sleepy cues 2️⃣ FEEDING - if you’re planning to breastfeed please please please take time to understand how to make sure your body gets the message that… your baby was born and it’s time to make milk. This is the difference between struggling with pain and low milk supply or peacefully enjoying the newborn stage. 👀 learn hunger and full cues in your 2nd/3rd trimester 🎉 If you’re due in April, May, June or July comment “CUE” and I’ll dm you a link to learn sleep cues. Hi 👋 I’m Valerie, an overnight doula, lactation counselor and mom of 3 (including twins). I help first-time parents get ready to bring their baby home. At @newparentsacademy you’ll learn tips so your baby cries less and sleep and feeding go more smoothly. This adorable video is a remix from @ashley.vanpevenage

I hired a doula when I was 6 months postpartum because if I didn’t get a break to sleep or get caught up on work, I was going to mentally tank even lower than I already had. I remember how guilty I felt. How it felt like I was failing. I had to pay her to come help me take care of my child. I remember the day I desperately needed sleep, she came over & told me to go up in the nursery, turn the sound machine on, & take a nap in the rocker. I cried myself to sleep because I felt so much shame. Tbh, no one really talked about paying for a village in motherhood, so it felt like I was doing something wrong. So hi, if this is you, hire the help, take the nap, take the time. I look back on those 3 months with so much gratitude for the compassion that woman showed me. She’ll never know how grateful I was. Also, hi, I’m Kate, a Trauma Trained Nervous System Practitioner that is working hard to get my free resources in the hands of other moms. Hit that follow button & then grab the free tool in my bio. I’ve had hundreds of moms tell me it’s made a difference in how they manage the mental load 🖤 #workingmom #momsover30 #millenialmom #workingmoms #motherhoodunfiltered

Would you do this?! 🤨 Sounds like some people are heated over a Black mother hiring an overnight doula. What are your thoughts? Follow @blackmediapage for this and more! Mom-of-two Brittany Bright, 28, from Arkansas, who goes by @itsbrittanybright on TikTok, posted a video last month explaining a typical night with her postpartum nighttime doula. #blackmediapage . Many commenters on the video criticized Bright for hiring a postpartum night doula. “Nope,” one person wrote. “No. The days fly by and these middle of the night feeds are so special in the early days.” . Someone else wrote: “She’s doing your job and having experiences that belong to a mother!” “That makes me sad,” another commenter wrote. “Some of my best memories are with my babies throughout the night.”

✨ Here ⬇️ This is for you. The quiet one. The one who doesn’t love being the center of attention. The one who processes things internally. The one who feels her stomach drop a little when she thinks about being asked questions in the middle of contractions. You’re not dramatic or weak. You just don’t like feeling put on the spot. And hospitals can feel like a lot. I know what you might be thinking, "Maybe I’m just not assertive enough for this.” But that’s not the problem. The real issue isn’t your personality. It’s that no one ever explained how laboring in the hospital is actually like. When you don’t know what’s normal, everything feels urgent. So when everything feels urgent, your brain wants to shut down. Especially if you’re introverted. But imagine this instead… You walk into L&D and you already know what usually happens first. You recognize the monitor. You know what admission questions are for. You understand which conversations are routine. You’re still quiet. Still you. But you’re calm. You don’t feel rushed or cornered. You just feel… oriented. When I worked as a labor and delivery nurse, I could tell within minutes which moms felt confident. And it wasn’t because they were loud or outspoken. It was because they understood what was happening. I watched quiet, introverted moms handle labor beautifully when they had learned about what to expect. Same personality. Completely different experience. I saw it again and again. So here’s the first thing you can do... Learn about what actually happens when you walk into the hospital in labor. Because when your brain knows what to expect, it doesn’t feel like you’re constantly catching up. 🌟 And if you’re a quiet first-time mom preparing for a hospital birth, follow me. I’ll teach you how to feel prepared, not pressured, without ever needing to become someone you’re not. 💚 #empoweredbeginningsdoula #firsttimemom #1sttimemom #momtobe #doula • hospital birth • birth • labor • childbirth • labor prep • pregnant • pregnancy • 1st trimester • 2nd trimester • 3rd trimester • parent to be

Is everyone telling you to eat dates in pregnancy? They actually have a point. Eating dates in late pregnancy is linked to - shorter labor duration - reduced need for induction (that’s when medical providers start your labor on purpose) - improved cervical readiness - reduces risk of postpartum hemorrhaging (that basically means your losing too much blood post birth- little more complicated than that but gives you an idea) - reduces risk of postpartum depression Dates are high in fiber (7g per 100g) and are high in vitamins and minerals especially potassium (656mg - which is more than a banana; you need about 2500 mg per day), magnesium (54mg - you need about 320 mg per day) and iron (~1mg - you need about 18mg per day). The other amazing thing about dates is that they are sweet but have a low glycemic index which means it won’t spike your blood sugar levels like regular sugar. Here is how many you should be eating: Before week 36: 2-3/day Week 36: 3-4 per day Week 37: 4-5 per day Week 38-40 and beyond: 6 dates per day (that’s about 70-100g) Comment “Dates” and I’ll send you my favorite recipe Give me a follow if you liked this post and want to support a single mom growing her Instagram ❤️ For the best pregnancy and postpartum meal delivery out there (that also has the tastiest dates, made by my dear friend) go to @nourishmealdelivery #birthprepared #postpartumdepressionprevention #doula #birthdoula #datesforbirth pregnancyhealth pregnacy datesarethebest
