My eyes fluttered open, disoriented and groggy, as the relentless beeping persisted, demanding my attention. I fumbled to silence it, my hand reaching blindly for the snooze button as I tried to shake off the drowsiness that clung to me. The room was still dark, and the comfort of my bed seemed to mock me as I reluctantly dragged myself out of its warmth. Each morning, the alarm felt like an unwelcome intrusion into the peace of sleep, a reminder that the day had begun whether I was ready or not. As I sat up, the reality of the day ahead slowly crept in, but the immediate discomfort of waking up was always the hardest part. The alarm’s sound, which once seemed like an innocent signal to begin the day, had now become synonymous with the rush of obligations and responsibilities. Still, there was no escaping it. The alarm had done its job, pulling me from the haze of sleep and into the demands of the waking world. Though I longed to drift back to sleep for just a few more minutes, I knew that the rhythm of the day was already underway, and I had no choice but to follow its pace.

Now we know that if your child is well, alert, and showing no red flag symptoms before bedtime, sleep is the best medicine for their brains after a minor head knock and you don’t need to wake them. 💤 Sleep helps the brain to heal and most little ones will be groggy if you try to wake them in the middle of the night - leading to more anxiety for you… not less! What matters more is checking them carefully in the few hours after the injury BEFORE bed and knowing the red flags to watch for. These red flags include: - If they are knocked out at the time of the event - Extreme drowsiness in the first few hours after the event (e.g unable to wake them from a nap) - Multiple episodes of vomiting (more than 3 episodes each more than 10 minutes apart) - Behaving oddly, confusion or unsteadiness on their feet. - Memory loss around the time of the event (in older children) - Severe headache that does not settle after a period of rest and simple pain relief such as paracetamol or ibuprofen. I follow these steps to make sure everything’s okay every time my baby falls on his head. He is a very active boy, I can’t be happier with that, but things happen and I want to make sure everything is fine! 1. I first dim the room by turning the light off. 2. Then, I quickly turn the light back on and watch how my baby’s pupils react. Both pupils should promptly constrict (get smaller) and appear the same in size. 3. I carefully check each eye a few times to ensure the response is consistent. I make sure one pupil isn’t larger, smaller, or slower to respond than the other, which would be a warning sign. I also make sure my baby doesn’t show other concerning symptoms—like drowsiness, vomiting, or unusual behaviour. Save this if you have an active baby and immediately contact your paediatrician or head to emergency care if you see any of these signs. Trusting your instincts in these moments is essential for keeping my baby safe. Share this with a mom that needs it! You know who I’m talking about… Good luck!
