In case you missed it, Donald Trump called environmentalists “terrorists.” Let that sink in. Citizens of this country who are simply pushing back against powerful people in oil, timber, real estate, etc., are now being referred to as the enemy of the nation. I mean, he got one thing right. The point of a terrorist is to sow fear, to spread fear and use it to control and adapt behavior. So yeah, pointing out the data around climate change and hoping it makes people afraid for the future is what environmentalists try to do. But here’s what he missed by calling environmentalists terrorists. He missed the love, the care, the passion we have for this natural world. He missed the hope we have for a future where species can thrive. He missed to compassion, the tenderness with which we interact with nature. The problem is that he doesn’t understand and never will. He, like so many others in power, has never spent meaningful time in nature. He’s never devoted any effort into learning about the natural world. To him and many on his side, there’s no point in caring about something you only intend to profit from, to use, to violate. And why would we expect anything different from a man who has shown that this is how he treats nearly everything and everyone in his life? #environmentalist #nature #wildlife #wildlifephotography #conservation

Is living sustainably a privilege? this response warrants nuance. There’s a lot of factors that determine how ‘sustainably’ someone can live, especially if we’re talking about a country or town that doesn’t have efficient public transportation, maybe lacks a recycling program, or marks sustainable items to be priced much higher. There’s also the time and intention it takes to search for a choose more sustainable options, which are often more expensive and that isn’t always compatible with someone’s lifestyle. This isn’t to excuse not doing what we can, but it’s important to approach these conversations without judgement or shame (which is a bad long term motivator anyone) and look at what systems we can improve to make it easier for people to participate. For example, having walkable and safe cities, abundant public transportation, programs that make organic foods cheaper and more accessible, addressing food injustice etc! So if we want to help others live more sustainably we should help change imperfect systems. #sustainabilitymatters #sustainableliving #sustainability #environment #environmentalist

Did you ever think about how slavery shaped the land, making Europeans wealthy on the way? We miss entire pieces of the equation when we overlook the histories of our landscapes and research them as static places. The truth is that there are stories in the land and not all of them are pretty or kind. When we make these connections clear we understand far more about the contexts of the landscapes we research and exist within. If a deeper connection and understanding of the land is what we want, we won’t obtain it through surface level research and inquiries. We must interrogate histories to receive the full stories available to us. I’m not afraid to admit that: 1. I’m not hopeful all the time. Despite ‘climate joy’ being something I talk about all the time- I am human and also currently grieving ecosystems, and what could be. My hope is a verb, its actions, and my activism a love letter to the Earth. I cannot say I feel well right now, but that’s okay. As long as it doesn’t consume us, we can feel this way, and then keep going. I know how much power we are building and that there is still time. Throughout it all, i choose to find joy 💓 2. I don’t agree with every tactic that every climate group or organisation does- that’s impossible we are a movement of millions of people with different theories of change . But I also recognise nuance, and that a variety of strategies are not only necessary, but expected to achieve social change. 3. Sometimes I doubt my own work and have fell to imposter syndrome. Being autistic, and a young black woman means that navigating the climate space has been difficult sometimes. Previously, feeling sidelined and tokenised, left me with lower self esteem. I’ve had moments I have considered quitting this work all together - out of feeling like I wasn’t truly making an impact- but of course my heart has always drawn me back. 4. I used to feel that how I dressed (like a nature fairy as I’ve been compared to) would make people take me less seriously. That’s their problem, not mine 5. It took me a while to internalise that being a spokesperson is also just as valid as behind the scenes organising- though it can often be overlooked! 6. Behind the scenes organising is not glamorous !! but essential. we all end up doing emails, spreadsheets and organising logistics 7. I don’t know what the future holds for me! I haven’t got it all planned out and that’s okay too. I’m going where my heart is drawn to and what I feel called to. Sometimes that’s been into spaces advising & advocating on policy as a young person, drawing on my studies and experiences. And recently that has been moving towards creativity and music. Sometimes what brings me joy changes - that’s okay too. #activism #environmentalist #sustainablefashion #outfitinspo #fairycore
