Fast-Moving Springy Birds Each colored chip on the Orbita triggers a unique bird tweet, depending on its color and position. My software, Hachijo Tape Manipulator, works as the main brain here — it calls the tweets with some malfunctionality, forming a bird song. That song then goes into a Roland Chorus Echo (a tape delay) with spring reverb, played through the loudspeaker of a Marantz cassette player. I’m adjusting different knobs to change the speed, amount of feedback, spring reverb, chorus, and more. It all sounds together with other birds on cassettes in one room — captured with two microphones, recorded on reel-to-reel tape, and digitized simultaneously.
