The wicker toboggan ride in Madeira is one of the island’s most iconic experiences. It starts in the village of Monte, high above Funchal. You sit in a traditional wicker basket mounted on wooden runners, and two men—called Carreiros—guide the sled downhill using their boots as brakes and steering tools.
The ride lasts about 10–15 minutes and takes you through narrow, winding streets at surprising speed. It’s a mix of fun, tradition, and a little adrenaline. The Carreiros wear white uniforms and straw hats, and the whole experience feels like stepping into a piece of living history. The toboggan system dates back to the 19th century, when it was used as a fast way for locals to travel from Monte down to Funchal.
