“It Was Just a Walk in the Park” #hookworm Hookworms are a type of parasitic roundworm that infects the intestines of humans and animals, causing a condition known as hookworm infection or hookworm disease. These parasites belong to the family Ancylostomatidae and are characterized by their hook-like mouthparts, which they use to attach to the intestinal lining and feed on blood. While hookworm infections are endemic in tropical and subtropical regions with poor sanitation and hygiene practices, they can occur in other areas as well. Here’s a detailed exploration of hookworms, including their life cycle, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention: Life Cycle: Infection: Hookworm larvae, which are present in contaminated soil or feces, penetrate the skin of humans or animals through direct contact. Once inside the body, the larvae migrate through the bloodstream to the lungs. Migration: In the lungs, the larvae mature further and ascend the respiratory tract, where they are coughed up and swallowed. They then reach the small intestine, where they mature into adult worms and attach to the intestinal wall. Feeding and Reproduction: Adult hookworms feed on blood by attaching to the intestinal mucosa with their hook-like mouthparts. They produce eggs, which are passed in the feces of infected individuals and contaminate the soil, completing the life cycle. Symptoms: Anemia: Hookworm infection can cause iron deficiency anemia due to the loss of blood from the intestinal tract. Symptoms of anemia may include fatigue, weakness, pallor, and shortness of breath. Abdominal Pain: Some individuals may experience abdominal pain, cramping, bloating, or diarrhea as a result of hookworm infection. In severe cases, gastrointestinal bleeding and malabsorption may occur. Skin Rash: Skin penetration by hookworm larvae can cause a localized rash or itching at the site of entry. This is known as cutaneous larva migrans or “creeping eruption.” #parasite #health

That photo was sent to me by a mother who found this in her child’s vomit. I’ve been a family physician for years — and it still made me stop. This is Ascaris. Roundworm. It can grow up to 35cm inside your child’s intestine — the length of a pencil — before any symptoms appear. In many cases, children never show symptoms at all. No stomach pain. No weight loss. Nothing. Until it’s big enough to travel up and come out. In India, 1 in 3 children carries intestinal worms at any given time. The source isn’t dirty children or bad parenting. It’s contaminated soil, water, and unwashed vegetables — things every household deals with. What you can do today: Keep your child’s nails short and clean. This is the single most effective daily habit — worm eggs lodge under nails and re-enter through the mouth. Wash hands before every meal and after every bathroom visit. Make it non-negotiable. What most people don’t know: Deworming isn’t only for when your child complains of stomach pain. Current guidelines recommend deworming every 6-12 months for all children above 1 year — even when they seem perfectly healthy. Because by the time symptoms appear, the worm load is already significant. One dose of Albendazole. Prescribed by your doctor. The whole family — same day. Save this. Send it to a mother who needs it. I’m Dr. Farwah — Family Physician and mother. I share things your doctor doesn’t always have time to tell you. So follow for more.

This rolling ball of spaghetti is actually just a bunch of millipedes moving in a swarm. Such a behavior can be observed, especially when the millipedes are still juveniles as they move as a group for protection and efficiency. This type of locomotion can be found in other arthropods like sawfly larvae too. By collecting in large clusters as seen above, the individuals on top will actually gain speed by moving atop a platform of millipedes that is already walking forward. As each animal rotates between being on top and on the bottom, the average speed of the group actually increases and they can hastily move across flat terrain like this gravel path. 🤔💩🐛 A few customers are seeing pinworm in dung this season, but it can sometimes be tricky to identify between pinworm and roundworm. Pinworm are small white worms with a pointy end, usually around 5cm (2 inches) in length. Roundworm tend to be much bigger, creamy white in colour and more the shape of a common earthworm. While not a direct threat to horse health and unlikely to cause serious illness, pinworm can cause significant irritation for some horses, a literal pain in the bum and tricky to get rid of. This is a horsehair worm, a parasite with one of the most twisted life cycles in nature. Its story begins in water, where the adult worm lays thousands of eggs. These eggs hatch into larvae, which cling to aquatic organisms like insect larvae or snails. These intermediate hosts are crucial because they allow the parasite to get into the food chain. When an insect, such as a cricket or grasshopper, eats the infected intermediate host, the horsehair worm’s larva enters its new home. Inside the insect, it sheds its protective casing and begins its real growth. Over the next several weeks or even months, the worm feeds on its host’s internal fluids and tissues—but it’s careful not to kill its host. Keeping the insect alive is essential for the worm to complete its life cycle. Once the worm matures, it needs to return to water to reproduce. To achieve this, it chemically manipulates the host’s behavior. The infected insect becomes abnormally attracted to water—ignoring its natural survival instincts. When the insect reaches water, it often jumps in or falls in, giving the worm the opportunity to emerge. The host usually drowns or dies shortly after, as its body has been hollowed out and weakened by the parasite. After emerging, the adult worm swims freely in the water, seeking a mate to restart the cycle. It lays its eggs, and the process begins all over again. It’s a grimly efficient life cycle that’s designed to use multiple hosts and exploit their behaviors, ensuring the worm gets exactly where it needs to go. 📽 by @nategavin - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Nature Is Metal is powered by you! Bringing back one of the coolest things I've gotten to see in the wild, maybe ever. This was one of the last things we expected to find, but it quickly became one of the most, if not the single most, exciting find of a trip to the Western Ghats of India back in 2023. Caecilians are never a sure thing to see in general, much less a mother Caecilian guarding her carefully dug nest. What made it even cooler is that these eggs were ready to pop, with what looked like basically fully formed babies moving around and anticipating their upcoming eviction. We later learned that there were likely several other Caecilian nests nearby, all with eggs at more or less the same stage of development. The eggs at various nests all hatch at once, with the arrival of a rainstorm signalling them to emerge, choreographed across the many Caecilian nests spread out under the forest floor. How cool is that?! Bonus points if you can count the many different ways we considered using the eggs 🤫 Peninsular Caecilian Icthyophis bombayensis South Goa, India, August 2023 . . . . . . #herping #herp #caecilian #amphibian #icthyophis #nest #egg #mother #hatch #rare #herpetology #science #conservation #goa #india #westernghats #ghats #asia #monsoon #rainforest #rain #wildlife #endangered #biodiversity #amphibians #fieldherping #zeevng #zngphotography #teampixel

Looks like ASMR, but it’s a fight for survival. This girl isn’t popping eggs for fun—she’s saving her farm. Apple snail eggs are an invasive nightmare: they destroy crops and spread dangerous parasites. Crushing them protects entire ecosystems. 💬 Would you do the same if your farm was at risk? 📌 Save this for when pretty things aren’t harmless #AppleSnail #NotASMR #FarmWarrior #InvasiveSpecies #CropDefense #PestControl #FarmLife #EnvironmentalProtection #SatisfyingButReal #NatureNotPretty

Silk Worms Farming. See how silk clothes are made by killing millions of insects, in fact, these insects are farmed between mulberry leaves, a female silkworm lays 300 to 400 eggs at a time, and within ten days insects start coming out of each egg, which are called larvae, then the larvae keep secreting a kind of liquid for three to four days, and this liquid takes the shape of thread as soon as it comes in contact with air, after which these threads take the shape of a ball which is called Cocoon, then by boiling them in hot water, silk thread is obtained, insects are also present inside the cocoon which die in hot water.
