Water Concerto was written by Tan Dun, the Academy Award–winning composer known for blending traditional instruments with unconventional sound sources. In this piece, the instrument isn’t just percussion — water itself becomes the instrument. During the Malta International Arts Festival performance, virtuoso percussionist Beibei Wang performs the concerto using bowls and containers of water, striking, splashing, and shaping sound through movement. Instead of sticks on drums, the music comes from ripples, drops, and the physical interaction between hands and water. The result is unusual even for contemporary classical music. Rhythm comes from fluid motion, and every splash becomes part of the composition. It feels less like a traditional concert and more like watching sound being created in real time. “Music before metal, strings, or electricity — carved from stone.” What you’re seeing is a lithophone, one of the earliest known musical instruments created by humans. Made entirely from stone, each piece produces a distinct pitch when struck, depending on its size, shape, density, and material. Early humans selected naturally resonant stones such as granite, basalt, marble, and even fossilized wood, arranging them carefully to create rhythm and melody thousands of years ago. Archaeological discoveries of lithophones span Asia, Africa, and Europe, with some dating back several millennia. These were not random rocks — many were deliberately shaped, tuned, and positioned, often found in ritual or ceremonial sites. Ancient cultures believed stone vibrations carried spiritual significance, using sound in religious ceremonies, communal gatherings, and sacred events long before written music or modern instruments existed. Most musical instruments stop instantly when power is cut, but a pipe organ behaves very differently because it produces sound using pressurized air rather than electricity alone. When the air supply is interrupted during a performance, the sound does not stop. It begins to change. Inside the organ, large reservoirs called wind chests store pressurized air that feeds the pipes. When airflow is shut off, this stored pressure slowly drops instead of disappearing at once. As the pressure falls, air moves through the pipes at lower velocity, causing the pitch to slide downward and lose stability. What sounds like a haunting scream is actually physics at work. The organ is not glitching or malfunctioning. It is a mechanical system exhaling its last remaining air, revealing how deeply physical and alive this instrument truly is. Love technology? Some guitar makers intentionally recreate decades of wear on brand new instruments through a process known as relicing. Rather than waiting years for natural aging, builders carefully distress the finish to match the look of guitars that have survived countless tours, temperature swings, and handling. The goal is to capture the visual character of a well played instrument without affecting its playability or structure. One technique involves using light hammer strikes combined with rapid temperature changes to crack the surface coating. When the finish is quickly heated or cooled, it expands or contracts faster than the wood beneath it, causing fine fractures known as finish checking. These cracks mimic the natural patterns seen on vintage guitars, especially those finished with nitrocellulose lacquer. This process is highly controlled and focuses only on the finish, not the wood itself. Skilled builders study how real instruments age over time so the wear patterns look authentic rather than random. When done correctly, relicing creates a guitar that feels visually broken in while remaining mechanically sound and fully functional. 7-string guitar tuning, not a problem for Roadie 4! #repost @andrewhulshult I backed the Roadie 4 kickstarter earlier this year and finally got it. Just tested it on my @caparisonguitars 7 for the first time and it works like a charm. I can save all my instruments and specific tuning to it. This thing is F'n slick man. #roadie4

In this creative cover of HandClap by Fitz and the Tantrums, two musicians recreate the song using only hand-made instruments. Instead of traditional gear, they build rhythm and melody from everyday objects, turning the performance into both music and experimentation. The result shows how the song’s strong groove and catchy beat can be recreated in unexpected ways, proving that creativity and rhythm can turn almost anything into an instrument.
