MAGIC E PAPER TOWEL ACTIVITY - As if learning to read wasn’t hard enough, our language throws in a curve ball to try and trick us up even more. Does anyone else have kids that get hung up on the ‘Magic e’ words? Magic ‘e’ words are words that have an ‘e’ at the end of them to signify that a short vowel sound can be changed into a long vowel sound. The silent ‘e’ forces the preceding vowel to say its name. 💫 This magic paper towel activity is a fun and quick set up to help practice those tricky magic e word. Fold a piece of paper towel in half and write the word (without the e) on the front with marker (we used sharpies). On the inside of the paper towel add an ‘e’ in a different color. 💫 Have your child read the word shown on the front of the paper towel (without the e, using a short vowel sound) 💫 Gently lay the paper towel into a shallow tray of water. As the towel gets wet, the ‘e’ underneath will reveal itself. Magic E : Magic E takes a little more time for them to understand the concept but when taught right , it’s very simple for the kids to follow . What is Magic E ? The letter “E” has so many jobs to do . One such is MAGIC E. When the letter “E” comes at the end of the word , before “e” there should be one consonant and if there is any one vowel (a,e,i,o,u ) before the consonant then Magic happens. What Magic ? E will jump over the consonant backwards and go to the vowel friend and change short vowel sound to long vowel sound which is sound of the letter to name of the letter. This magic doesn’t work when there is 2 consonant between E and the vowel . Hope - Magic E ✅ Hopped - Magic E ❌ Teach Magic E with this simple Rhyme : The E jumps over the consonant The E jumps over the consonant The E jumps over the consonant And vowel says its name . This is so simple and easy for the kids , check the video for the tune of the song. How to teach ? Teach CVC to CVCe which is the first and easiest step for beginners/starters . Magic e rule - When ‘e’ is at the end of the word, it is usually silent and makes the vowel before it say its name (long sound). Help build reading skills with this phonics rule. The magic e vowels are as follows: a_e, i_e, o_e and u_e. A list of some 350 Magic e words and exceptions sorted by word family as well picture words is available in my shop. The list is sorted by word family. For instance, -ace, -ade, -age, -ake, -ale, -ame, -ane, and so forth. Also included are a set of 24 words in black and white images as well as color images. Cut them to make your flip book. Comment “YES” and I will send link to your DM.
