ITKing Malcolm III of Scotland is one of the most famous side-characters in history.
In 1040 Malcolm’s father, Duncan I, was killed in battle against Macbeth (yes, THE Macbeth). Then Malcolm and his brother fled the realm, with Malcolm probably spending his exile in England at the court of Edward the Confessor. In 1054, Siward, earl of Northumbria, invaded Scotland with Malcolm, seeking to put him on his father’s throne. Siward’s army triumphed at Dunsinnan Hill and in August 1057, Macbeth was killed in the Battle of Lumphanan. Malcolm would rule Scotland until his death in 1093, during which time he married the English princess Margaret of Wessex, with whom he had eight children. Of those eight, three ruled Scotland and one became queen of England. His wife, Margaret, was noted for her piety and was eventually canonised in 1250. However, Malcolm’s existence has been immortalised throughout the Anglophone world through his depiction in Shakespeare’s Macbeth.
