GLDuring the 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA) debate in Parliament, EFF MP Leigh-Ann Mathys challenged NCOP Chairperson Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane over the refusal to acknowledge the presence of former President Jacob Zuma, who now leads the MK Party.
In the exchange, Mathys stated: “You even acknowledged FW De Klerk the whole murderer, but you cant acknowledge President Jacob Zuma.”
She emphasized that Zuma, as a former head of state who was not impeached, deserved recognition on the same basis as others, including former President FW de Klerk.
After further discussion—including contributions from EFF leader Julius Malema referencing de Klerk—the chairperson consulted rules and ultimately acknowledged Zuma's presence, stating: “Honourable members, before I call upon the next speaker, I would like to take this opportunity and acknowledge the presence of the former president of the Republic of South Africa, honourable Zuma.”
