Although the companies have not revealed an official explanation for the exclusion of the iPhone 9 and Windows 9, there have been several speculations about this exclusion. Stated below are the most common claims:
APPLE
- Apple introduced the iPhone X on iPhone’s tenth anniversary (2017). It's likely that Apple wanted to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the very first iPhone by launching its “Xth” model while simultaneously marking a fresh beginning with a complete redesign of the iPhone.
- Another theory is that the number 9 is considered unlucky in many cultures, (including the 9/11 incident) and Apple didn't wish to take any chances.
MICROSOFT
- When it comes to Microsoft, their previous version (8) was highly criticised. Thus, it is believed that they wanted to demonstrate how significant a change their next version, Windows 10, was, and therefore they skipped the number 9 to symbolise the huge change as well as to distance itself from the backlash.
- Another popular theory is that because there was a Windows 95 and 98 in the past, a similar Windows 9 would cause confusion and code overlap.
