Q: Where/How do you get all these?!
A: I find most of mine! Mostly walking through the woods, near water, in fields, or along roadsides. Others are gifted to me!
Q: How do I clean them??
A: I usually use maceration (bucket method. Just water and bones with tissue, let bacteria do the work, NO SOAP OR ANYTHING), then degrease with water and Dawn dish soap, then whiten with hydrogen peroxide (Pharmacy strength works! Do NOT use bleach or boil? It damages bones!!)
Q: Those methods don’t work for me. Can I do anything else?
A: Absolutely! There are several options. For a quick break down, check out my YT vid “A Vulture’s Quick Reference to Bone Cleaning Methods” to get some ideas!
Q: Is this legal?
A: In my area, yes! But it can depend on where you live and what you collect!

MIThe first ball python was not preserved in the globe, and the second one was.
The first snake was preserved in a cylindrical jar, and so his body molded to that shape.
I later switched him to a globe and had to manipulate his stiffened body quite a bit to get him to fit. Hence the empty spaces.
The second ball python I preserved inside the globe from rhe start, so I was able to fit its body to coil around the globe while he was still soft and pliable. Hence most of the space is filled.
Different people have different preferences, but if you have a specific positioning in mind, make sure you keep in mind that formalin will stiffen the specimen up, so you should position it early!

BADISCLAIMER: I know a lot of people aren’t aware of the laws around bats, so I’m not calling anyone out but I encourage you to please do your research so we can protect wildlife while upholding sustainable acts in the oddities and curiosities community
While i would love to say that most oddity shops/crafters source sustainably; that unfortunately isnt always the truth. Theres no such thing as “bat farms” theres no such thing as sustainably sourcing almost any bat taxidermy. Almost all bat taxidermy you see is a result of hunting and the majority of them are either extinct, or at risk of becoming extinct. If you were in the market for purchasing one, please dont. We need to stop giving these people money when they claim to ethically source their pieces and in reality they’re far from ethical practices. Please do your research when purchasing oddities for your art or for your own personal collection 🖤🖤
