Take a moment of peace and float here with this orca in Norway! Norwegian orcas have a really special way of hunting herring called carousel feeding. Our cofounders @paulnicklen and @mitty described it as an orca ballet—choreographed, cooperative, and mesmerizing to watch. Here’s how it works: A pod locates a large school of herring using echolocation. Then, led by the matriarch, they swim in circles around it, herding the fish into a ball with clicks and whistles and bringing it near the surface. There, they blow bubbles, slap their tails, and flash their white bellies to disorient the herring and tighten the ball. Once the fish are wrangled, the orcas take turns whipping their tails through the school, stunning or killing several at a time. While one orca feeds, the others keep the herring contained. These high-pitched clicks travel through the water, before bouncing off anything they make contact with, returning to the Orca along with information about what they contacted! This particular Orca is examining a stingray that it has just incapacitated via a flank strike. Echolocation lets it examine it better then it could with eyes alone, as the sound waves can “see” inside! Echolocation has many uses for these marine mammals. With it, they can communicate with others over the vast distances of the ocean, as well as locate prey underwater!

This footage captures a specialized behavior where an orca appears to “interact” with a seal pup, often a harbor or elephant seal, as part of a complex hunting and teaching process. • Physical Traits & Power: Orcas are the largest members of the dolphin family, with males reaching lengths of up to 30 feet and weighing over 6 tons. They are incredibly fast and agile, capable of bursts of speed to pursue prey in both deep and very shallow water. • Behavior and “Culture”: Different orca populations, or “ecotypes,” have unique hunting cultures passed down through generations. As seen in the video, experienced matriarchs will often capture a seal pup and bring it to their young, allowing the calves to practice essential hunting skills in a controlled environment. • Specialized Hunting Tactics: Some orcas use a technique called “intentional stranding,” where they lunge onto the beach to snatch pups directly from the shoreline. Others coordinate to create “wave-washing” effects to knock seals off ice floes and into the water. • The “Playful” Predator: While the interaction might look like play, orcas often “toy” with their prey for an extended period. This behavior serves a dual purpose: it tires out the prey to make the eventual kill safer for the whale, and it provides an invaluable “live-prey” training session for younger members of the pod
