But here’s why 6 months is the deadline: Safety first: Once teeth start coming in, they can chew pieces off and choke. That alone should be reason enough! But also development: The longer it stays in, the more it affects: ∙ Jaw growth patterns ∙ Tongue function ∙ How addicted they become to it Here’s what most people don’t realize: The majority of upper jaw growth happens by age 4. MORE THAN HALF of their top jaw development is done by then! By age 2.5, I can already see severe jaw restriction in some kids. That’s how much growth happens in those early years! Growth is on a CURVE - it’s fastest in the beginning! Every month that pacifier stays in during this rapid growth phase is affecting how wide that jaw develops. And jaw width = airway space = breathing = everything downstream. Narrow jaws lead to: ∙ Mouth breathing patterns ∙ More infections ∙ Restricted airways ∙ Sleep issues ∙ Behavioral problems Most parents don’t know this! Pediatricians don’t usually mention it!
