One of the great strategies of the anxious mind is to convince us that we don’t have a choice regarding how we respond to intrusive thoughts. Anxious and habitual brain writes this equation: Intrusive thought = alarm = ruminate until we “solve” this (unsolvable) problem. • This strategy keeps us on the hamster wheel of intrusive thoughts… endlessly. And if we think we solved one thought (by getting enough reassurance or by growing tired of it), another one pops up to replace it. This is what we refer to as the whac-a-mole of intrusive thoughts. • I know it’s hard, but we DO have a choice regarding how we respond to thoughts. And, as Frankl says, there IS a gap between stimulus (thought) and response (ruminating or not ruminating). When we remember to access that gap, we can CHOOSE not to ruminate. And therein lies our freedom. • But the story usually doesn’t stop there. What are left with when we make the brave choice to step off the hamster wheel of rumination? Groundlessness. Uncertainty. Grief. Sometimes fear. Sometimes disappointment. Sometimes loneliness. • In other words, we’re left with the messy and alive emotional mix that defines our humanity. It might feel daunting at first, but we’re designed to feel our feelings, and we can grow skills and muscles that allow us to feel more comfortable with big feelings. • As I wrote in “The Wisdom of Anxiety”: Emotions are manageable; anxiety is not. Anxious brain sends us the illusion of control but in the end, when we spend our time ruminating, we feel more and more out of control. It’s an endless maze. • But when we drop down into our hearts and feel our feelings, we learn that they move through us, we re-enter the river of life, and things becomes manageable again. • #intrusivethoughts #OCD #ruminating #anxietytools #wisdomofanxiety
