AA'I WILL NEVER BRING YOU TO RUSTAN’S EVER AGAIN'
I've probably told every Tantoco I know, including Nedy Tantoco, that when I was a young boy, my mother's only sister and my ninang, Nini Edralin, who happens to be on vacation here now from Seattle, would tell me every time I disappointed her, "I will never bring you to Rustan's ever again."
That warning always worked. Back then, a trip to Rustan's was enough of an event to keep me in line. I do not remember exactly why it held such power over me, only that it did. It felt like entering one of those places that already carried a story before you even stepped inside, the kind that enlarged whatever small life you thought you had because every shelf, every counter, every polished corner suggested another way of living.
The vision was there from the beginning, when Anton's grandmother, Glecy Tantoco, set it up in 1952 to bring the best of the world into the Philippines and, in time, the best of the Philippines to the world as well.
I am not sure, though, that I have ever told Anton Huang this, not even the afternoon I left my tita and her family, with whom I had promised to spend the weekend, so I could sit down with Anton and my friend Jules Vivas for a tête-à-tête. Anton now sits at the helm of Rustan's, although he speaks of the role less as ownership than stewardship. We were supposed to do it at his house, but he had a meeting nearby, so we changed plans and ended up at Rustan's instead, in the boardroom on the top floor.
I have always been drawn to storied places, grand hotel lobbies, old dining rooms, stores that seem to gather the world and arrange it within reach. Even when many of the things before me belonged to a world I knew I could not yet claim, I never came away empty-handed. Something stayed with me every time, some small enlargement of what I thought my life might yet hold. ✨
