Unapologetic opinion—I hate a self insert. I don’t read books to basically play my sims. I read books to experience something new, to understand people who are nothing like me and grow my empathy for humanity. But that doesn’t happen when you write a character whose basically you in costume 💡They either become overpowered and untouchable. They never make mistakes of true consequence, lose anything that matters or change in a meaningful way The whole book reasserts who they already are 🫡 and what they already believe. These are the kind of characters that make readers wish the book was about the quirky best friend instead of them. It’s not crime 🤷🏾‍♀️, it’s actually really easy to fall into writing a self insert character especially when you’re constantly being sold 100 page character questionnaires that give you meaningless answers that don’t tell the important things like - what’s yours characters survival/coping mechanism 🤔 - what’s their motivation 🫀 and how to find it? - what do they need? Internally 🧠 - what do they want🙇🏾‍♀️? So I created a FREE guide 🖥️ that asks the most important questions to help you write with confidence and clarity so you never question what your character should say or what they would do.
