FLAt the end of my two-week residency at @make_hauserwirth I smashed, (recycled), ninety-percent of the pots I’d made. (And please excuse the flicking—I forgot to change my shutter speed…) A collection was kept, that’ll be glazed and fired and given back to the gallery, if it survives the journey. I was creating in a space that didn’t have a kiln, which meant once the pots were trimmed, and allowed to turn bone dry, they’d have to be transported in that state to somewhere that does have a kiln. If anyone here has tried transporting thin, exceedingly fragile bone dry pots, then you’ll know how tricky that is. So, much of it was instead smashed, soaked in water, and will be recycled back into usable clay that can be made into new pots.
In the future, if I do another residency, I’ll try to collaborate with a local ceramicist to find a way of firing and glazing the work I deem appropriate, which can then be sold, or donated. Yet, there is a slight worry I have with creating work, stamping it with my maker’s mark and then handing it over to a third party to glaze and fire—the pots represent me after all and when it is no longer in my control who knows what’ll happen to it. Think of a painter who has finished half their canvas before signing it, and handing it over to another artist they don’t know to finish it.
Thankfully clay is very reusable material but it was equally a strange experience destroying work on this scale, although it was cathartic in nature, and for those around who I let smash some pieces too. It marked what was a fleeting moment, pots made for the purpose of showing others how pots are made.
