Do you know the difference between a service dog and an emotional support animal? While both provide comfort and support, they serve very different roles. Service dogs are specifically trained to perform tasks for a person with a disability, while emotional support animals provide comfort through companionship. Understanding the difference is important when it comes to training, legal protections, and what’s best for your needs. If you’re looking for guidance on training or finding the right fit, message us today to get started.

Repost because this is still a very important topic and explanation, especially with how many “emotional support” ads I’ve been seeing lately. Those online registrations and certificates are scams. Buying a vest, ID card, or “papers” online does not make your animal an emotional support animal and it absolutely does not give them public access rights. In the original video, a woman said she wanted to boycott Buc-ee’s because they would not allow her emotional support animal inside, even though she claimed the dog had papers. She was confused about why service dogs are allowed but emotional support animals are not, and she was upset that employees asked the two legal questions businesses are allowed to ask. This is where a lot of misinformation happens. Emotional support animals and service animals are not the same thing. Under the ADA, emotional support, comfort, or companionship alone does not qualify as a trained task. Because of that, emotional support animals do not have public access rights to non pet friendly places like stores. Businesses are legally allowed to ask two questions when the disability is not obvious Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability What work or task has the dog been trained to perform That is exactly what the employees did here. They followed the law and handled the situation correctly. Honestly, Buc-ee’s did an amazing job. Instead of boycotting businesses that follow the law and protect legitimate service dog teams, we should be commending employees who actually understand the rules and enforce them properly. That employee deserves a raise. This post is for educational purposes only. We do not, have not, and never will condone any threats or harassment towards individuals featured within this post. #servicedogs #emotionalsupportanimals #explorepage #viral #fakeservicedogs

Pets have been helping mankind for centuries, whether it’s in the fields, in the home or when hunting. Research strongly correlates emotional health in humans with PTSD to the steady, predictable and safe nature of dogs. Meet Rolo, my medical and emotional service dog who literally helps me with everything, including feelings of safety and connectivity. #servicedog #ptsd #emotionalsupportanimal #bonding

Amy and Lindy’s story is why we do what we do. Lindy is Amy’s mobility service dog. She helps steady Amy and picks up the things Amy drops. In Amy’s words, “I have my life back now because of this training,” and she tells people in the video that everyone should come here. It didn’t start that way. Before training, Lindy was a wild child. Knocking Amy down was common. Her husband had already said, “If we can’t get her trained, she’ll have to go to a new home.” They loved her, but living with her in that state wasn’t safe, and it definitely didn’t feel like support. Now Lindy is a working partner. She helps Amy move through her day instead of taking her off her feet. She can steady Amy, retrieve items, and be part of Amy’s life without putting her at risk. The relationship is calmer, safer, and actually useful in the way a service dog is supposed to be. We’re not a dog resort. We’re a training camp for calm, reliable dogs in real life and the people who depend on them. If you’re reading this and thinking, “That’s what I want with my dog,” that’s exactly what we work toward here in Springfield. We only start 15 new dogs each month at our facility, and spots go fast. 🐕‍🦺 Service Dog (working = “hands off”) A service dog is actively working for one specific person—often doing tasks that affect safety, independence, or medical needs. When you pet or distract them, you can: • Break their focus during a critical task (like guiding, alerting, or bracing) • Delay a medical alert (seizure, blood sugar, etc.) • Put the handler at real risk 👉 Think of it like interrupting someone while they’re driving a car. Cute, but not the time. 🐾 Therapy Dog (working = “interaction is the job”) A therapy dog’s job is basically the opposite: • They are there to be interacted with • Petting, talking, and engaging is the whole purpose • They support groups of people (hospitals, schools, events) 👉 If no one pets them… they’re not really doing their job.

I have seen several posts of service dogs “working” with someone other than their handler. Just because your dog is a service dog for you, doesn’t mean it’s a service dog for others. Your service dog is not legally protected if someone else has it. - Believe it or not, this is faking a service animal and isn’t legal.

You shouldn’t feel stressed taking your service dog out 👇🏻 The whole point of a service dog is to lower stress by accommodating your disabilities and easing their effects. Even during your training outings before your dog is fully trained, it should not feel stressful. If it is, you need more support (and that’s totally normal!) I struggled for years with this trying trainer after trainer, and it wasn’t until I learned more about canine behavior and stress that I felt better about it all. Once I learned how to watch for stress in my dog, what to do when I see tiny signs, and go more slowly for her, I was able to relax and have fun with her. Her stress and “unpredictable” behavior stressed me! One of my favorite things to do with my students is help them learn how to identify stress, manage theirs and their dogs, and go slowly enough for their dog to learn and build a foundation. It’s something I feel is missing in many service dog training programs. If you’d like to learn to train your own service dog while still prioritizing your dog’s wellness, you’d love my program. Inside, you’ll train a service dog to increase your independence without an enormous price tag. Comment, “SD2026” for more details in your dms. PS Watch this video to see if you can find the subtle signs Q displays of stress. This was a brand new, loud, changing lights environment that she’d never experienced before - so there is some stress here. This is an old video of ours - she is very much still retired. :) #serviceDogTraining #ServiceDoginTraining #OnlineServiceDogTraining #GreeleyCOServiceDogTraining Video description: Blonde person in a navy shirt and a backpack walks through a museum area with changing lights and windows up and down the long hallway. The lights are dim and rotating colors. Her service dog walks with her and show subtle signs of stress from the new environment. The text reads, “That feeling when you can enjoy an outing with your service dog instead of stressing about it.”

I will die on this hill. If you’re not going to take time to train your dog and build a connection with it, you have no business, putting an emotional support vest on it for the convenience of taking it out in public when you want. It’s an irresponsible decision that is a disrespect to service dogs and the community of people who need them. #ISaidWhatISaid #Emotional #Support #Dog #Responsible #DogMom.

Service dogs have important jobs to do and distracting them can put their person in possible danger. Legally you are not to distract service dogs, but I personally believe that a service dog should be trained well enough to ignore basic public distractions, like kissy noises or someone yelling “puppy!” My service dog has been trained to ignore these distractions, look to me for guidance, and wait for command. Occasionally, I allow clients to greet with him, but only once I release him. This really allows for a general understanding of when, how, and who he’s allowed to be greeting while on duty at work. There’s many “rules” of service dogs that I don’t follow and I’d love to share those, but what do you think of this? _____________ #servicedog #viral #fyp #dogtrainer #chronicillness
