One of the biggest fears beginner swimmers have (whether they're conscious of it or not!) is not being able to get their feet back on the floor. Learning to stand calmly and in a controlled way can transform how safe and relaxed you feel in the water, setting you up for long-term success! It's important that you are with a teacher or partner in the water, who can help support you as you learn this critical, fundamental skill. Because for many adult beginners, it is not as easy as it looks, and our instincts to rush or panic can quickly take over! Blow out while rotating your body to one side. One arm stays extended in front of you. 2. Turn (don’t lift!) your head to breathe
As you rotate to your side, turn your head just enough to breathe in through your mouth. Keep one eye in the water, one out 👁️ 3. Roll back and continue
Return your face to the water, extend the other arm, and continue your stroke smoothly 🔁 Focus on timing, rotation, and keeping it smooth. Syncing your arm stroke with body rotation for more power and less effort. ✨ Step by Step Technique: 1. Body Rotation 🔄 Rotate your body side to side with each stroke, keeping it controlled and smooth not too flat, not too wide. This rotation helps reduce resistance and sets up a stronger pull. 2. Reach Forward 🤿 Extend your arm fully in front of you, reaching forward in line with your shoulder. Let your body rotation help you lengthen your stroke and glide more. 3. Catch & Pull 💪 Start the catch early by pressing your hand into the water, then pull straight back under your body. Focus on feeling the water and maintaining a strong, steady pull. 4. Opposite Arm Recovery ↗️ As one arm pulls underwater, the other recovers relaxed over the surface. Keep it loose and efficient, avoiding tension in your shoulders. 5. Core Connection ⚡ Engage your core and let your hips drive the rotation. Your whole body should move as one unit not just your arms working alone. 6. Here are some tips to help ease the nerves and anxiety around swimming alone in the open water. 🏊‍♀️ • Firstly when first getting in cold water can shock your system and increase anxiety, it's best to get in slowly and adjust to the temperature. I do freestyle with my head up out of the water for a few strokes to allow my body to adjust to the water. Keeping your head up out of the water for a few strokes allows your body time to adjust. You can put your face in gradually as you adjust. 🏊‍♀️ • This tip is a bit of a funny one, but I always use when swimming in the open water and it works for me. When my head is down I close my eyes and then open them when I breath. "But why would you do this when you are wearing goggles?" Well I'll tell you why, because it calms me, I find I get more anxious being able to see what's under the water, and when it's murky and you get glimpses of things underneath it sends my heart rate through the roof because it gives me a fright. So to avoid this keep your eyes closed when your head is in the water and you won't get any shocks. And then open them when breathing and sighting! Trust me, give it a try. Not recommended when racing though 👊🏼 🏊‍♀️ • Swim in a wetsuit and take a tow float. Wetsuits provide warmth, make you feel more secure and act similar in a way to a hug or weighted blanket, when your anxious the tightness can help calm you. Well that's what I find anyway. A visible tow float also for safety and something to hold onto if you need a rest. 🏊‍♀️• My last tip is swim with others of course 😅 I always recommend never to go swimming alone, and if you do at least have someone on the shore or in a kayak keeping an eye on you, but swimming with others lessens the anxiety a whole lot more because you feel more secure, safe and if there's a shark there's plenty of people for it to choose from 😉😉 . #swimming #openwaterswimming #swimtips #swimmingtips #oceanswim #oceanswimming #triathlon #triathlete #swimbikerun #swim #tips #triathlontips #beginnertips
